Happy New Year! As we approach the end of the first month of 2019, I want to share my list of characters that I drew the biggest inspiration from when coming up with my resolutions. All five of these characters carry multiple traits that I feel the world needs more of. Without further ado here are five characters that I hope to emulate in 2019.

1. Lei from Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

Lei inspires me to be emboldened and set the world on fire. Lei fiercely stands for what is right, even when the majority are not on her side. In this day in age, I think we need more of Lei’s fire. That fire within her calls to me and I hope I can cause as much of a spark in 2019 as she did.

2. Alice from Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann

Taking the lead from Alice, I want to be unapologetically myself. Alice doesn’t let the world define her. She knows her flaws and accepts them but she knows her great qualities and refuses to be small. Even when society continues to question her.

3. Blanca from Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore

The del Cisne sisters, specifically Blanca, are undoubtedly fiercely protective of each other and their sister relationship. I am inspired to be this protective of my family and friends. When the outside world tries to pit people against each other, it should only make you stronger. Believing in the power of those close relationships is one of the greatest lessons Blanca taught me.

4. Zofia from The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

Zofia is one of the smartest women I have met in literature. I want to channel her investment of knowledge in 2019. I want to crave learning and see things through different perspectives. Zofia’s intelligence in The Gilded Wolves is undeniably brilliant to read. This book overall inspires me to learn as much as I can about the world around me.

5. Inej from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

When I think who I most would want to be when it comes to loyalty and endurance of the spirit, Inej from Six of Crows immediately enters my mind. Her spirit flies off a page. She is insanely tough physically but her soul is where I saw her true strength. In 2019, I want my soul to follow suit and never allow it to give up, even if it seems like I won’t make the climb.

These heroines have incredible minds and spirits. I hope to be as bold, intelligent and spirited in the new year as these characters have inspired me to be. Despite any of the flaws they feel they have, they stand for what is right and they are loyal to those around them. Showing that in the face of adversity we must believe in ourselves and trust in our power.
