Billionaires Begone! These Blue-Collar Heroes Will Fulfill Your Fantasies

By Suzanne from Under the Covers

The romance genre has a long tradition of millionaires, billionaires, gazillionaires swooping, charging and generally bursting into a heroine’s life and fixing all her problems. It’s prime wish fulfilment, and I could populate a very long list with all the billionaire heroes I want to sweep me off my feet. However, sometimes it isn’t the hot guy in the sharp suit that captures my attention. It’s the blue-collar guy. The one with those beautifully worn-out jeans, sun-browned skin and beat-up truck. Since we celebrated Labour Day this week, I thought it would be a great time to highlight some of my favourite blue-collar heroes.

Cherish Hard by Nalini Singh

Nalini Singh has long since been an auto-buy author for me, she can write it all it seems! An enthralling paranormal romance, a thrilling urban fantasy and a fantastic contemporary romance. Cherish Hard by Nalini Singh is the first in her Hard Play series and features Sailor Bishop a landscape gardener who is working hard at building up his business. What I loved about the romance in this was how down to earth it was. Sailor and Isa (the heroine) weren’t perfect and they both had their own emotional baggage they needed to overcome. However, this is a Singh book…at heart it was a beautiful romance with a hero and heroine you can fall in love with.

Perfection by R.L. Mathewson

When I first discovered R.L. Mathewson I knew I had struck gold. I had found an author that wrote books that had a direct line to my funny bone. I realised pretty soon that I could only read her books whilst alone and in private otherwise I looked like a crazy person cackling to herself. Perfection by R.L. Mathewson has a special place in my heart; it was the first book I read by her. It also features Trevor Bradford. How to describe Trevor? Arrogant. Obsessed with food. Unintentionally hilarious. Gorgeous. Trevor works construction in his family’s business but has always felt a little inferior to his cousins due to his dyslexia. This little bit of vulnerability mixed with his arrogance and obliviousness to the fact he was falling in love with the curvy Zoe makes him one of my favourite heroes.

Until November by Aurora Rose Reynolds

If you are after some sexy alpha heroes who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty you can’t do better than Aurora Rose Reynolds. I especially love her Until series, which starts with Until November. The Until series features the Mayson brother a quartet of drop dead gorgeous bossy males, all of whom work in construction. Each brother is a well-known player…until he meets his ‘Boom’, the one woman he can’t live without. Once he has found her he focuses all that red hot alpha male attention on the lucky lady, fully dedicating himself to her happiness, which of course entails a truck load of orgasms. These rough and tumble guys are an irresistible mix of sweet and arrogant, sexy and cute and I highly recommend you give them a try.

Hello Stranger by Lisa Kleypas

When you think of Historical Romance what usually comes to mind is ladies in gorgeous ballgowns and men in starched suits and cravats. The ladies and gentlemen of high society, the ton, dominate the genre. However, every now and then an author will give us a different perspective and Lisa Kleypas does that in Hello Stranger. We are taken away from the Mayfair and ballgowns and instead we traverse the back alleys and dingier parts of London. Ethan Ransom is a former Scotland Yard detective who is used to dealing with the rougher side of life. Ethan is a dangerous man, but in Hello Stranger we get to see a softer side of him as he falls for Dr Garrett Gibson, the only female doctor in the country. Lisa Kleypas shows us that it isn’t just polite society that can have beautiful love stories in this adventurous Historical Romance that shows you a different side of London.

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

To end my recommendations, I decided to shake it up and give you a heroine. Mercy Thompson is a VW mechanic and a shapeshifter and, in a world full of powerful vampires and strong, overbearing (and kind of sexy) werewolves she must be wily to stay alive and independent. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs is the first in the Mercy Thompson series and our introduction to the hectic and dangerous life of Mercy. This series is great as it has a bit of everything: a fascinating new paranormal world, complex characters, lots of action and great storylines all served with a dash of romance. If you are after a series to really grab you and not let you go then you need to pick up Moon Called by Patricia Briggs.

About the Author

As you can tell, I, Suzanne, adore and day dream about most romance genres, and my three big loves are 1) reading about romance 2) writing about romance and 3) talking about romance with my gals. Which, is why I love Under the Covers so much, I get all my bookish needs satisfied and don’t get judged when I talk about my favourite characters like they are real people. Which they are right?
