I’ll Take a Tall Glass of Talk Dark and Steamy with my Comedy, Thanks. The Birth of the HotCom

Let’s talk RomComs. Those light-hearted, laugh-out-loud, entertaining books from start to finish. You know, the comical perception on love and happily ever afters? Our favorite stories that grab our attention and hearts from the moment we flip to the first page? Basically, the all-around perfect mix of romance and comedy, as a reader, I love to read. As an author, that’s my jam!

But what if it’s time to take those heartfelt comedies a step further? Literary times are changing. Readers are itching for just a little bit more when they snuggle into their nooks ready to get lost in the words of their favorite authors.

It’s time we introduce readers to the next level of comedic entertainment. We’re all familiar with the story about the heartbroken girl who triumphs all obstacles during a disorderly display of challenges in order to find her very own happily ever after. The fictional must-haves with wit, banter, and clever plot twists to keep our anticipated minds engrossed, satisfied, and turning our pages. In return, we reward their inner swoon side with romantic scenes that keep us on the edge of our seats hoping for more without knocking us off entirely.

And for those who want to be thrown…let me introduce you to my newest creation, the hotcom! I’m that reader who thrives for a book that tugs at my heartstrings as well as my panties. I want my fictional character to cause my heart to quicken and my temperature to rise. And this was how hotcom was born.

What in the heck is that you ask? No need to fear, I’m going fill the curious minds with knowledge and need. And once I’m done, the need to pick up a hotcom will be consuming! *winks and waves*

Let’s begin. The birth of the hotcom began in 2016. I was well on my way into writing my ninth book, the funniest of them yet, but I wanted to spice things up. As any author would be, I was worried about causing too many waves with my pool of dedicated readership. They loved my romcoms. Like I said, that was my jam! Just the right amount of wit, banter, and sweet, sweet romance. Why would I mess up a good thing?

But I had this itch I needed to scratch. It was that dark itch every author gets. Their secret vision of writing something just a little bit spicier. A wee bit sexier. And a tiny bit naughtier. Would my readers fall off if I took them to another J.D. Hollyfield level? Would they banish me to the dark side forever and label me as a light and fluffy romance genre traitor?

Let’s be honest, building a fanbase is not an overnight thing. But losing them can be. I had to do a lot of seeking and research to make sure someone would follow me if I took my writing to a whole new level. And by someone, I meant more than my mother, sister, and three aunts. So, I took a chance, sat down, and wrote a story. It had the right amount of verbal felicity, but this time around, I let loose. I broke some of those sexual barriers I was so used to writing and pushed myself to limits that, at moments, even made me blush. The end result? I wrote a really hot romantic comedy.

Now, I know you all are dying to know what I consider hot. Is it erotica? Is it borderline “my grandmother would be rolling in her grave if she knew I read it” hot? Girl! (And boys.) No! It’s sexy! It’s steamy! It’s gonna make you scream, “Why haven’t I read a hotcom sooner?” from the rooftops. Too far? What if I told you I give you my word you’ll love them! That’s a big promise. I’d be putting my entire reputation on the line if you all came back unsatisfied! But haven’t you ever wanted to put just a little more spice on things? Turn up the heat for the hero and heroine?

That was my goal and intention when creating these hotcoms. From my first novella, Passing Peter Parker, where I introduce readers to the naughty science teacher, to the second book in the series, Creed’s Expectations, where we meet Creed Monroe and follow him on his journey of revenge, deceit, and—you guessed it!—unforbidden expectations. And this November, we get to meet Damien Cross in the third hotcom installment. Exquisite Taste is a riveting story of a thriving college student who accepts a dare she cannot complete and a smug club owner who sees her as a game he’s determined to win. Jensen and Damien grip at your emotions and turn up the heat with the perfect amount of angst, suspense, and humor.

So, I challenge you! Are you looking to fall down the rabbit hole of the perfect story that hits all your checkmarks?

The feels!

Did I mention humor yet?

Oh, and yeah…steam.

A hotcom is all the juice a thirsty romance reader could ask for.
