It goes without saying, readers are super easy to shop for.
Sorry, couldn’t keep going with a straight face. We’re actually the worst to find a gift for. I mean, you’d think, just giving us a book is the answer, but I’m here to tell you, it’s NOT!
As a kid who liked my books with my oxygen (yes that’s a Gilmore Girls pun, you’re welcome), I never understood why my family members wouldn’t just give me a gift card to the bookstore so I could go nuts. “It’s not personal enough,” they’d say. “Doesn’t she want anything else?,” they’d ask, and each and every time, I’d end up with some god awful outfit I’d never wear, no gift-cards (even to other places than the bookstore), and ZERO books.
So to keep you from saddling the reader in your life with the obligation of having to painfully fake a thankful smile as they die a little inside when they open your 17th attempt to make them wear something pink and patterned…
I gift to you, one epic AF list of small business bookish shops full of bookish things you can get the bibliophile in your life, if you’re determined to not get them books that they actually want to read.
Seeing as how we all know that readers are puzzling creatures, who usually love to solve problems and figure out how a plot is going to come together, check out some of these jigsaw puzzles from designer Risa Rodil – my favorite is her Library is Paradise design, and I can’t wait for mine to get here so I can put it together and put it up on my wall! Best thing about these puzzles? You can decide how many pieces you want it to be so readers young and old can put them together with ease! PS: I’m not responsible for any obsessions for more puzzles giving this one as a gift will cause.

If your reader is a tea drinker, I highly recommend you get them some bookish themed tea to sip while they’re cozied up reading during these colder months! The Forest Witch has teas inspired by Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones just to name a few, so no matter their reading and sipping tastes, you’re bound to find something that will pair perfectly!

For those who prefer to express their love of the written word in a more subtle way, while still showing off their favorite books, consider getting them a bookish scarf from Storiarts they’ll actually love to wear. Even better? A matching tote bag, and some writing/reading gloves! Ain’t nothing classier than books, amiright?

A reader wouldn’t be a reader without some candles burning in the background for ambiance, so if you’re looking for a suggestion on where to find your readers favorite fandoms in wick form, Novelly Yours is your go to. Novelly Yours is a one woman show, although you’d never know it because she’s killin’ it, who’s got a broad range of candles from generally bookish, to home centric (I highly recommend Tea Boutique),
and back to bookish fandoms like my faves, The Darkling (smells exactly like you’d expect him to smell from the Grisha Trilogy – perfect to get ready for the Netflix Series coming soon if I do say so myself!), Currently Reading (smells like your favorite bookstore with a cafe in it), and she rotates in seasonal smells as well to keep things fresh and exciting. She recently rolled out a new line, Enigmatic Aromas which features my current obsession, Tarot Reading, and they’re perfect for all your book magic vibes! Oh and in case you’re already a fan of her monthly themed candle boxes like I am, or you’re dying for more of a scent from a past limited edition, you can always email her and ask if she can do a Scent Obsession for you. Which is basically your favorite scent in a huge jar, so you can savor it. I’ve only ordered a few of them myself, but they are soo soo worth it!

This next one is simple, get them a GIFT CARD to your LOCAL BOOKSTORE! More times than not, non-readers tend to forget that bookstores are literally a reader’s happy place. You say nirvana, I say bookshop. And local bookshops usually always have cute local items, small reader gifts perfect for stocking stuffers, and killer customer service. Best part? They’re all super readers. So not only can the reader in your life chat for hours on end with someone about the ins and outs of their latest read when they go in (shout out to the Toadstool Bookstore where I spent so many afternoons doing just this growing up)! If the store doesn’t happen to have the book they’re looking for in stock, they’ll order it for you, with a smile on their faces (usually, not guaranteed). Or they’ll have at least ten other suggestions for you based on the book you’re looking for – my favorite bookseller Lizy at Copperfish Books here in SWFL has never steered me wrong! Seeing as how every area is different, my best suggestion is to Google Local Bookstores or Bookstores Near Me, and look for the one that you don’t recognize. Bonus Idea: If the local shop has a bookmark for the store, collect & save them!

Does it drive you crazy when your favorite reader uses anything available for a bookmark? Including but not limited to, your receipts, a sticky note, random notes and pieces of paper? Well, perhaps if you were getting them some bookmarks from Dreamy & Co, they’d use those instead. I make no promises because some of their bookmarks are works of art in themselves, and I can’t bring myself to use them in a way that might bend the corners, so I display them, but at least the reader in your life will have that option… Honestly, the only way to really know is to buy them a handful of different ones, or gift them a subscription to their monthly Dreamy Box, which is full of bookmarks, prints, a candle, and just last month, a puzzle! You can tell your accountant he’s welcome from me when you’re not missing receipts next year come tax season!
Oh and PS: Dreamy & Co also has some incredible prints, pins, book sleeves, and magnetic bookmarks! And if you’re looking for more bookish candle companies, their sister company Flick the Wick, is also one of my all time faves! For the record, this isn’t a paid sponsorship, I just love their bookmarks!

If the reader in your life has a mug permanently attached to the hand not holding a book, The Dark Forest Co., also a one woman show, is your place to find them some snarky bookish inspired mugs. You can even get a matching t-shirt or hoodie to go with it, because you can never rep your favorite fandom hard enough. Trust me on that one. My favorite mug isn’t pictured but you can find the Raven Boys inspired mug here!

The expression – messy bun, gettin’ stuff done – in this case is actually – messy bun, reading is my fun – so naturally, every reader should be prepared to rep their favorite fandoms in comfort and style! Fablebands is my go-to place for this with their headbands, scrunchies, and they’ve also got a few scarves as well! If the clever designs aren’t enough to have you running to stock up, how about the fact that they’re handmade by a lady engineer, who’s also a mom (which is a full time job as it is), and made with love. Who said readers can’t be fashionable and nerdy? Answer is, not this girl!
