Teens: Speak Up!

This Spring, Miami Book Fair is offering Speak Up!, a creative writing and performance program supporting the artistic and professional growth of teens, virtually.

In this FREE virtual creative writing workshop mini-series, teens from all over the world now have the opportunity to partner with each other and with experienced teaching artists and writers. This collaboration has been created to empower the creative writing process, from drafting to performance to publishing, to boost literacy and empower of teens through these writing and performance activities.

“We envisioned Speak Up to be a brave space for teens to be able to explore creative writing, especially poetry and performance, which can often seem unapproachable and mysterious, said Marci Cancio- Bello, Program Coordinator for Miami Book Fair. “Moving the program online during the pandemic now offers our students the chance to engage with other students and award-winning teaching artists from all over the world. I’m not surprised what incredible work our teens can create and share when we pass them the mic.”

For three weeks in May, May 1, 8 & 15, best-selling author of Slay, Brittney Morris will host Speak Up and will be working with teens to develop and burnish their writing skills and the telling of their own stories. She is known for writing from experience, while weaving in issues of racism, prejudice, diaspora and stereotypes in the age of Black Lives Matter. Through these workshops, she will also help teens examine stereotypes and the impact they have on themselves, as well as how intergenerational trauma affects teens, and their families.

Speak Up! is open to all teens (ages 13-19) and is as free of charge, as it is free of homework. No previous experience necessary!
