[Note From Frolic: Our resident YA expert Aurora Dominguez got the opportunity to interview Laurie Halse Anderson and ask her five(ish) questions. Her graphic novel ‘Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed‘ is out now!]

Aurora: What was your inspiration behind your most recent graphic novel?

Laurie Halse Anderson: DC gave me the chance to write about Wonder Woman at age 16. That let me write the version of her as she’s coping with being a teenager and a refugee to the World of Mankind.

Do you relate to Wonder Woman in this novel? How and why?

Just like Diana I was an awkward teen, enraged with the injustices of the world. But she finds strengths I don’t have. Like all the greatest superheroes, she’ll help balance the scales of justice.

Why do you feel graphic novels with powerful and unique characters are so popular and have such a voice right now?

Because people under the age of 40 speak and understand the language of images as well as words. We are wired to respond to storytelling in both text and pictures. Combine the two and you create a deeper, richer story experience.

Please describe the content of your latest release and graphic novel and what can readers expect from it.

Princess Diana’s sixteenth birthday is interrupted by the sighting of refugees from the World of Mankind. What happens next launches Diana into our world, where she has to navigate the ways of humans and streets of New York City. This is a book for readers searching for their inner strength and ready to make the world better for everyone.

What’s next for you in the graphic or comics or even books world?

I’m working on graphic novel adaptations of my novels about the American Revolution.

Who is your current favorite artist and writer? Why?

Leila del Duca is the shining star artist I’m watching. And Tiffany D. Jackson writes suspense-filled novels that are incredible.

Any writing advice for aspiring writers?

Don’t give up – it is hard for everyone! Make art, write, dance, sing – engage in all forms of creativity because they feed each other. You are the only person who can share the stories of your heart.
