At a recent panel at the Miami Book Fair, New York Times Bestselling author Chanel Cleeton opened up about how, while both of her books Next Year in Havana and When We Left Cuba are fictional, they are based on the harsh realities that her family had to face fleeing Cuba during the revolution.

Cleeton told Bustle, “It was important to me to fictionalize the family, but also to make everything that happened in the books historically accurate and realistic.”
