Is The Hunger Games your favorite YA series? Are you obsessed with post-apocalyptic dystopian thrillers? If so, you are going to LOVE the TNT original series Snowpiercer, which just debuted at a panel during the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Set to air on your home televisions this spring, Snowpiercer is based on the critically acclaimed French graphic novel series Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette and 2013 film of the same name. The post-apocalyptic dystopian thriller takes place in the same universe as the original movie and is set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. The show centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a speeding train, with 1001 cars, that never stops its journey as it circles the globe. The Katniss Everdeen-esque protagonist of the show is played by totally dreamy break-out Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs. Diggs stars as Layton Well, the last homicide detective on Earth and a prisoner “tailie,” living in the harshest conditions in the tail end of the train who reluctantly takes part in a bloody uprising. Opposite to Diggs is Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Connelly who plays a woman from the elite part of the train charged with keeping order and totally channeling President Snow vibes. The tv show examines class warfare, social injustice, and the politics of survival on a non-stop, adrenaline-filled ride.
Though not an official Sundance selection, sneak peek footage of the show premiered to much acclaim and fanfare at Lateral at WarnerMedia Lodge: Elevating Storytelling with AT&T in Park City on January 25, 2020. The panel was attended by stars Diggs, Lena Hall, EP/showrunner Graeme Manson and moderated by JD Heyman, Editor-in-Chief of Entertainment Weekly. During the panel, star Diggs said what’s really exciting about the show is that, “every character’s beliefs are challenged as information is gained. Everyone on the train has to make decisions that they are probably going to regret.”
Snowpiercer is executive produced by Bong Joon Ho, who directed the original film and is celebrating much acclaim during this awards season with his current film Parasite. The show is set to be a huge hit for TNT and has already been picked up for a Season 2 renewal. Snowpiercer will premiere on TNT on May 31, 2020.
