[Note From Frolic: We have a thing for novellas. A BIG thing. In the next installment of an ongoing series, we bring you a piece from author Monica Murphy, whose novella ‘Nothing Without You‘ with our friends at 1001 Dark Nights‘ Kristen Proby Crossover Collection is out now!]

Back in the day, when I was younger and had more time on my hands, I would reread a lot of books because…why not? Mostly I would reread sweeping historical romances by my favorite authors of that time (Judith McNaught, Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood). They were just so good and there were particular scenes that would make me sigh with longing…

Time has marched on and there are soooo many books in this world, that I rarely (and I mean this) reread a book. Like, why would I need to, considering the massive amount of books on my Kindle app I haven’t read yet? And trust me, the number of books I haven’t read on my Kindle app is downright embarrassing.

But! There are a few books that have permanently touched my heart over the years. Books that are just too good not to reread. I can truly only come up with three of them, and one of them isn’t a romance (sorry!). Here’s my list, in no particular order:

Instant Attraction by Jill Shalvis

I am a diehard Jill Shalvis fan. I’ve been reading her for years, starting with all of those Harlequin Blaze books she used to write, and she never, ever disappoints (Bonus! She’s also a fabulous human being). My all-time favorite book by her is Instant Attraction, a book that came out ten years ago featuring a grumpy hero (Cameron Wilder) and a sweet yet shaken heroine (Katie Kramer). After having a near death experience, Katie wants an adventure, so she changes jobs and meets Cam.

Oh Cam. You are so sexy and so grumpy and you throw up so many walls. He is just…sigh. So complicated in the absolute best way. Jill writes such great heroes. They’re real, they’re sexy, and they’re stand up men, every single one of them. I love this book. So. Much.

On The Island by Tracey Garvis Graves

I had this book on my Kindle app for years before I actually read it. What a mistake, that I deprived myself of this amazing, emotional story! Good lord, this book is fantastic. A teacher is hired to be a tutor for the summer for a sixteen year old boy who’s recovering from cancer. They’re flying on a seaplane to his family’s planned vacation in the Maldives when…

The plane crashes. And they’re stranded on an island. For years. How fitting that this book about being on an island is on my desert island list, right? I could probably gain a few tips on island living from the story too.

This book has it all. I laughed, I cried, I stressed out, I got mad. It is such an amazing love story and I adore it.

The Stand by Stephen King

This book is large, peeps, so not only would it help me pass the time, it would probably come in handy as a weapon or a tool while I’m stranded, considering it’s so thick. I love Stephen King’s horror books, but The Stand is different. It’s about the end of the world, and how everyone who is left to start over divides into two camps: good and evil. And how those two camps must eventually face each other. It is an emotional tale, a relatable story that makes you think. This book has such a huge cast of characters, and somehow, King made you care for just about every single one of them (even some of the bad guys!). That all the characters had such distinct voices too, is a testimony to the greatness that is a Stephen King novel. This is one of my favorite books ever.

And there you have it—that’s my stranded on a desert island list!
