Epic Series to Read This Holiday Season (From Under The Covers)

By Suzanne from Under the Covers

With the holiday season now upon us it’s the perfect time to delve into those epic series that have been waiting on our shelf for too long. For me, there are so many ways a series can be epic; it can be the breadth of a series – when a series has a lot of books it’s hard not to see it as an epic. But, it isn’t always the number of books that’s important, sometimes it’s the journey the characters go on, the obstacles they have to face to achieve their goal. Sometimes that goal could be saving the world-as-they-know-it in a far-off land, but maybe that journey is a little more personal or even romantic. I love all kinds of different epic tales and here are some of my favourites for you to try this season:

Phèdre's Trilogy by Jacqueline Carey

When I think of truly epic stories, there are a few classic ones that I can't help but talk about.  Phèdre nó Delaunay's story in this first trilogy of the Kushiel world is one with no match.  It may stand as my favorite epic story of all time.  It's epic in many ways.  Grandiose, lyrical, complex, tragic.  The journey our heroine goes on in just three books will take you through ups and downs, emotional highs and gut-wrenching lows.  But through everything Phèdre has to face, the romance soothes it all away.  It's not the flashy kind of romance.  No, it's deeper.  More meaningful and infinitely more powerful.  Joscelin is the hero we all want by our side.  Fiercely loyal, will face any battle for you, will risk everything to be with you.  When it comes to epic, this fantasy series is my number one pick.

Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward

By now, you may have guessed that the Black Dagger Brotherhood series is a favourite of mine. It doesn’t appear in every recommendation I do, but I imagine it appears in most of them. I can’t help it, I am addicted. But, the epic title definitely applies not only are their 16 books out and counting, but the story and the emotional journeys the characters go on are powerful. You can laugh and cry in the same book as the Brotherhood struggles against their mortal enemies, protect their people and try and find their own happiness. It’s an epic journey and I invite everyone to watch it unfold.

In Death series by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts)

I had to put J.D. Robb’s In Death series in this list. In sheer volume it beats every book in this list with 46 books out and more to come it’s truly an epic task to tackle. However, although it seems daunting those 46 books fly by. The In Death series is a thriller set just slightly in the future with a strong romance element to it. Each book has an individual crime in it for our troubled but clever police detective Eve Dallas to solve. Which is how she meets the powerful and wealthy Roarke. I’ll say no more! But, if like me you enjoy a good mystery and some great character building you can’t go wrong.

Tairen Soul series by C.L. Wilson

I think the word epic falls most comfortably in the fantasy genre, which is why Tairen Soul comes to my mind when I think of an epic series. It has a beautiful love story which crosses class and even race divides. Then there is also a treacherous enemy to thwart and a world to save. It doesn’t get much more epic than that!

Experiment in Terror by Karina Halle

Sometimes an epic series doesn't need to take you to fantastical lands.  Maybe it just needs to captivate you so thoroughly that it's impossible to come up for air.  And that's exactly how hard and fast I fell in love with Dex and Perry.  A young duo of amateur ghost/paranormal hunters filming an indie show and facing some strange occurrences in some of the scariest and more haunted places.  But amidst all that scare, what kept bringing me back was the romance.  I am a full blown Dex and Perry addict.  You'll see, follow my advice and you won't be able to stop at reading just one.

Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich

Who says regular gals can't be epic too?  There's something incredibly adorable about Stephanie Plum.  This Italian Jersey Girl gets fired from her job and ends up working as a bounty hunter for her cousin Vinnie to scrape by some money. Her adventures in her new job are nothing short of hysterical and her family and sidekicks may just have you rolling on the floor laughing.  But more of a trademark here is the EPIC love triangle you're embarking in.  Joe Morelli is a cop and her former flame while Ranger is the sexy bad boy and professional bounty hunter that can always get her out of messes.  You won't be able to fall hard for both guys and guaranteed to be entertained by this hot mess of a ride.

These are some of my favourite epic series, some of them you may not of thought of as epic, but each one will take you on an unforgettable journey with characters not to be forgotten.
