About Make Me Yours, Cowboy

Knox Shepler is a country superstar in his prime, but each release takes him further away from the classic country of his roots. His agent suggests a compromise: if Knox writes another pop-crossover album, he can cut a single playing the music he’s passionate about. Paparazzi make inspiration hard to find on the road, so Knox heads to Paradise Island, posing as a contractor to hide his true identity.
Claudia Alvarez went viral several years ago for all the wrong reasons. Since then, she’s been keeping a low profile by working at A Cowboy in Paradise. The bar’s finances aren’t what they used to be, so in order to save the only place she feels safe, Claudia proposes renovating the bungalows on the property to generate extra income.
When Knox and Claudia are forced to work together, he finds inspiration and she discovers it might be time to open her heart. But as the truth surfaces, Claudia must decide if she can face her fears for a chance at the love of a lifetime.

Frolic-Exclusive Excerpt:

“Think you’ll find some inspiration here in Paradise?”

Knox’s gaze drifted from the beach to Claudia as she stepped behind the bar. “Yeah, I think I might.”

“I see you met Claudia?” Chick slid onto a stool and smiled as she set a mug of steaming coffee down in front of him.

“He walked in on me in the shower.” She cocked her hip and planted a hand on her waist. “You didn’t tell me you needed more help with the bungalows. We’ve already got Antonio working off his bar tab.”

Chick took a sip of his coffee. “Yeah, but once Antonio clears his debt, he’ll want to be paid. Knox here is working for room and board.”

Her eyes flashed with annoyance, then she turned her gaze on Knox. “I thought you said your name was Nolan?”

“It is.” He looked to Chick. He’d told him he wanted to fly under the radar. Wouldn’t do him any good to go to the trouble of making arrangements for a private getaway if someone found out who he was.

“It’s a nickname I came up with for him.” Chick made a fist and rapped his knuckles on Knox’s head. “He used to love knock-knock jokes when he was little.”

Claudia rolled her eyes. “Great, so the two of you go way back. Too bad you couldn’t have warned me we’d be having a long-term visitor. How long do you think you’re staying?” Knox felt like he’d passed the first hurdle with her but still had a long way to go to gain her trust. “I’m not sure yet.

Depends on how long Chick needs me.”

“I’ll print a copy of the list of things I’ve come up with so far.”

Knox pulled out his phone. “Do you want to just text it to me?”

She blew out a breath. “I don’t text.” “Email?” Knox narrowed his eyes. She shook her head.

“I guess a paper copy will work just fine, then.” He drained his coffee mug and got up to get a refill. Working with Claudia might be a little more challenging than he thought.

She blocked him from stepping behind the bar. “You need more coffee?”

“Yeah, I was just going to grab it myself.”

“Let’s get one thing straight. This area”—she gestured around the back of the bar—“is my space. That area out there is yours. You want something from behind the bar, I’ll get it for you. Otherwise, you’re on your own.”

Knox held out his mug. “Okay, then. Could I please get a refill on my coffee?”

She set the carafe down on the bar. “Help yourself.”

Clearly someone was feeling a little threatened by his presence. Knox would need to find a way to assure her he wasn’t after her position at A Cowboy in Paradise. All he wanted was a place to hide out for a few weeks, work with his hands, and see if he could reconnect with the inspiration that had provided him with four number-one hits.

Chick might think the world of Claudia, but Knox didn’t trust her enough to tell her the truth. And he didn’t have enough time to find somewhere else to hide if she blew his cover.

“Look, I think we got off on the wrong foot this morning.

Can we start over?” he asked.

She glanced up at him, her eyes slightly narrowed.

“I’m Nolan.” He held out his hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

After a few seconds of hesitation, she slid her palm against his. “Claudia. Nice to meet you, too.”

The same prickle of awareness buzzed up his arm. She was an attractive woman. The dark eyes, thick curly hair, curvy hips, and full, pink lips attested to that. But Knox wasn’t looking for a woman. Not even a one-night stand, though Claudia didn’t seem like the type who’d be into that kind of thing, anyway. He needed to shut down any hint of attraction he might be feeling, and fast.
