[Note From Frolic: Squee! We have a thing for novellas. A BIG thing. In the next installment of an ongoing series, we bring you a piece from author Carrie Ann Ryan, whose novella ‘Ashes to Ink‘ with our friends at 1001 Dark Nights is out now!]

It will come as no surprise to those who know me that I take a while to get into a TV show. Sometimes when I try a show the first season, I will dramatically fall in love with it and then it’s canceled the next week.

And by sometimes, I mean all the time!

So, I usually end up waiting a season or four until I binge them all. Plus, I don’t watch TV live anymore since I read at night and it’s a whole thing.

As I was perusing my Netflix list I noticed a show that seemed okay to me, one that I hadn’t heard much about other than in passing recently and figured I should try it out just to put it on in the background while I worked.

The show was Schitt’s Creek.

And, dear reader, I did not work!

I fell in love with this quirky family that seems so out of depth and like I would never have context or connections with them, but I was wrong! They are caring, amazing, and so vivid, that I watched all four seasons and the Christmas episode in a weekend.

I’m OBSESSED with this show.

Watching the characters grow over time and how they interact not only with each other but with the town makes me love what I do. Each character has layers and actually has growth as the series progresses and I so want to make sure my own books like Ashes to Ink are the same way.

Moira’s and Jonny’s relationship is strong and loving, one that I know is a true HEA. Alexis is finding herself just like any true heroine and watching her fall in love with herself in the right way just makes me happy.

And David. What can I say about David? (And yes, I’m saying his name like Alexis does because it’s the only way to say it now!) He’s such an amazing hero even if you don’t think about it that way at first. Watching him deal with his own insecurities and emotions makes me want to read about more heroes about him

And of course, I’ll never be about to listen to You’re Simply the Best the same away again.

Because, Schitt’s Creek, you’re simply the best. And I hope my own characters in Ashes to Ink and my other books grow and explore their emotions just like you.
