After months of scrolling through websites and watching BookTubers, I finally caved in and purchased my first book subscription box. For those of you who don’t know, subscription boxes are recurring subscriptions that offer customers a variety of mystery items that pertain to whichever hobby one prefers. There are tons of subscription boxes that range from bookish goods to makeup and skincare products (plus dozens more!).

On a whim, I decided to purchase OwlCrate’s December Box, whose theme was “Tales of Trickery”. OwlCrate is one of many book subscription services that offers at least one exclusive YA book (signed by the author) and anywhere from 3-5 other bookish items. There are several purchasing options that range from either a one month subscription or purchasing a box every month. (Boxes start at $29.99 + shipping).

As someone who has never purchased anything “mysterious”, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with what I received in my OwlCrate! The first thing that I saw on top was a “cheat card” which features stunning artwork and lists exactly what is in the box and who it was made by.

The next item that I found was a pair of rose earmuffs that are inspired by the Caraval Series. The earmuffs are the perfect size and are extremely soft and high quality.

The next two items that I picked out of the box were a cinnamon scented candle based on the novel Grace and Fury and a hand warmer inspired by Sky in the Deep. Keeping with the December theme, these two items are surprisingly extremely practical and useful! As someone who lives on the North East coast, I’ll definitely find myself using all the toasty goodies OwlCrate provided!

Aside from the novel, the item that I was secondly most excited for was a booksleeve inspired by Sorcery of Thorns! I’ve been wanting to purchase a cover for my books for years, but I never got around to it. Thanks to OwlCrate my books will suffer no more!

Each OwlCrate box comes with an exclusive enamel pin, and this months was accompanied by a coloring book and custom set of colored pencils that features artwork from previous pin designs. As someone who is currently suffering through finals, I will definitely be using the coloring book to calm down after long study sessions.

Lastly, and probably most importantly, this month’s OwlCrate featured an exclusive foiled hardback of Kiersten White’s The Guinevere Deception. A note from the author is also included! OwlCrate describes the novel as “an epic twist on the classic King Arthur tale!” While the blurb seems riveting, the changes that OwlCrate did to the dust jacket and hardback are absolutely stunning from the original. I can’t wait to dive into the retelling!

Overall, I would highly recommend OwlCrate’s service to any bookish fan! The items are all extremely high quality and really thought out. Also, OwlCrate supports a number of small businesses, and includes their items in their boxes. If you’re looking to take a risk and receive a book you may not pick up on your own, then OwlCrate is the perfect subscription for you!

If you’d like to see me review OwlCrate’s January Box titled “Vengeance Will Be Mine” or any other bookish subscription boxes, leave a comment and let me know!
