I don’t know about you, but I am definitely an early holiday shopper. As soon as Halloween is over, it’s all twinkle lights and peppermint tea for me! More importantly, I always make sure to give my friends and family at least one book with their holiday goodies! While the holidays may look a bit different this year, there is still plenty to celebrate. You can start baking some cookies or decorating your home, or you can be like me and get some early shopping done from the comfort of your couch! If you do end up buying some books for gifts (or for yourself, we don’t judge), check out these indie bookstores for all your bookish needs!

Sparta Books in Sparta, NJ

(973)-729-6200

I have to shout out some bookstores from my home state! I recently visited this cute shop one Saturday afternoon and I left with about 5 more books added to my TBR. The staff have a diverse collection of books on hand, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, give them a call and they can order what you’re looking for! They also ship, so you can enjoy the magic wherever you are!

My pick: The Answer Is . . .: Reflections on My Life by Alex Trebek

The Little Point Bookshop in Point Pleasant, NJ

(848) 232-4844

I couldn’t just include one Jersey bookshop on this list! I found this gem of a shop one last week when I was perusing the town shopping district. The staff is very friendly and offer great recommendations! If you’re not an East Coaster, don’t fret! The Little Point Bookshop can order books for you and ship them right to your front door! Just shoot them an email or give them a call and they can help you with your order.

My pick: Litograph: Emma

Birchbark Books & Native Arts in Minneapolis, MN

(612) 374-4023

I have not visited this shop in person, but I have definitely placed an online order or two (or three, but who’s counting). This is a great Native shop where you can find your next read and support some Native artists/creators. They are currenting doing curbside pickup and shipping online orders!

My pick: A Two-Spirit Journey: The Autobiography of a Lesbian Ojibwa-Cree Elder by Ma-Nee Chacaby

Other Books, Comics, and Zines in Los Angeles, CA

(323) 742-5409

This is another shop that I have not visited yet, but I anticipate ordering soon! Located in LA, this shop covers all your reading needs from comics to novels, you are bound to find your next favorite book here! They also ship!

My pick: Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Sister’s Uptown Bookstore in New York, NY

(212) 862-3680

I could not speak more highly of this shop. If you ever get the chance to visit, please do! This shop offers a diverse selection of books and they also ship! Definitely check out their website if you’re looking for new releases or pre-orders!

My pick: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

  1. Malik Books is a great community bookstore in the Los Angeles area. They have two locations, one in Westfield Culver City Mall and the other one is in Baldwin Hills Mall. They carry the monthly book selections for the Mocha Girls Read book club, including the December selection. They also have a wide variety of other books that are perfect for gift-giving this holiday season.
