[Note From Frolic: Our resident YA expert Aurora Dominguez got the opportunity to interview authors Krista and Becca Ritchie and ask them five(ish) questions. Krista and Becca’s novel ‘The Last Hope is out now!]

Aurora: What was your inspiration behind your most recent novel?

Krista and Becca: We consider ourselves pretty big comic book geeks. We will devour X-Men comics like candy, and big twists along with character-driven payoffs in comics inspired us while writing THE LAST HOPE. We often describe all the comedic moments in this sci-fi romance as Guardians of the Galaxy humor – it’s funny, galactic, but at the core it’s about friendship and love and humanity.

What character do you most relate to and why?

We both relate to different characters from THE RAGING ONES duology. Krista most relates to Court and his icy exterior, plus his vulnerable interior that he tries to hide. Becca gravitates more towards Franny and Mykal of the trio. Franny wants to cause no harm to others in her lifetime, and her morality is very relatable even when it’s tested and she questions what’s right as she tries to survive. As for Mykal, his soft spot for love and the people he loves reminds us of our twin bond, although neither of us are rugged Hinterlanders from a freezing northern land.

Why do you feel young adult books with strong characters are so popular and have such a voice right now?

We remember consuming an incredible number of young adult books growing up (we still do in our twenties!) and we were always drawn to strong characters even back then. Feeling heard is a huge reason why we believe readers gravitate towards characters that have these powerful voices. Those voices hopefully can reflect what readers hope or wish to say.

Please describe the content of your latest book and what can readers expect from the read.

The Last Hope takes place in a world where everyone knows the day they will die, and three teens have met the most unlikely fate by dodging their deathdays. This sci-fi romance duology centers on a trio who have an unbreakable bond. Franny, Court, and Mykal can feel each other’s emotions, and The Last Hope brings them on a discovery of truths about who they are and what their future holds. Readers can expect Court and Mykal forming an even deeper romance, while a mysterious boy shakes up the trio’s dynamic as he takes interest in Franny.

What’s next for you in the book world?

We’re currently creating more contemporary romances with lots of family ties and soul mate bonds. There is one thing that you can always expect from us, and it’s romance! We love love.

Who is your favorite writer right now and why?

Kennedy Ryan! Her writing is truly masterful. We’re always lost in her romances, like the Grip series, and her characters are so multi-dimensional and real. She has woven together so many poignant stories and covered important issues with such intelligence, nuance, and heart that we can’t recommend her work enough.
