“A mother is your first friend, your best friend, your forever friend.” –Unknown

Mom,

As Mother’s Day approaches, I’ve been thinking of ways to describe how much you mean to me. To tell you how much I appreciate you. To thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do for me.

It’s impossible.

The way I feel about you, the bond we share, the moments we’ve experienced together—it’s all beyond words. Words even I don’t have.

You’re my person, Mom. The one I admire most in this world, the one I emulate.

You’ve taught me how to be kind, to be a good human. How to listen. How to fight for what I believe in. How to be open-minded and independent.

Now, looking back, I realize the importance of each lesson and how they’ve impacted my life. Years later, those lessons have strengthened my friendships, they’ve taught me the importance of putting in the hard work. I’ve learned that good things never come easy.

You taught me to want more.

To be stronger.

I’m me because of you.

When it comes to us, I hardly ever need to voice how I’m feeling. My emotions, worry, fear, happiness—you feel it all. You’re there for me and I never even need to ask you to be. You’re always the proudest, you’re always present.

You’re the smile I look for. You’re the hand I reach for.

Throughout all the years, we’ve had so many moments. Some so incredibly beautiful, they serve as inspiration behind my novels. Some so difficult, I don’t know how we survived them. But we did—together.

I’m so grateful you’re by my side, Mom. That I can take this journey with you, that I can continue learning from you and growing, that we can keep creating more moments.

Thank you for being my first, best, and forever friend.

Happy Mother’s Day. I can’t wait to spend it with you.

I love you so much,

—Marni
