What to Read

Perfect Pairings: Books and Horror Shows & Movies

[Note from Frolic: This post is brought to you by our friends at Kensington. Looking for your next great read? Look no further than Unstable by Alexandra Ivy!]

No matter the season, I am always down for a great horror story. Horror is the one genre that can work year round. Summer? Killer filled camp. Fall? Halloween thrashers. Winter? Disastrous snow storms. Spring? Seasonal allergies. Regardless of the time of year, a good thriller is always fun! Before packing for your summer trips, check out some of these perfect horror pairings!

The Haunting of Sharon Tate (2019) & Unstable by Alexandra Ivy

I love a good thriller flick! Unstable is the perfect read to curl up with on a stormy night and is a great blend of thriller and alpha romance. Set in Pike, Wisconsin, a cold case expert and her ex-sheriff husband reunite to solve a closed case after a discovered VHS tape could change everything. If you love cold cases and fast paced thrillers, this is definitely the next book you should add to your TBR!

Detention (2011) & Summer’s Edge by Dana Mele

Is it really a good slasher without a friendship group struggling through high school? Summer’s Edge is an atmospheric thriller following an estranged group of friends being haunted by their friend who died the previous summer. Plus, just look at that cover!

A Quiet Place (2018) & Black Tide by KC Jones

If you’re looking for an insanely creepy and atmospheric novel, look no further! Filled with deadly creatures and terrifying haunted characters, Black Tide is the perfect back porch summer read.

The Crucible (1996) & Blood Like Fate by Liselle Sambury

The Crucible is such a classic when it comes to witches. This thrilling sequel to Sambury’s Blood Like Magic follows Voya Thomas after becoming a full fledged witch. Also, gorgeous cover alert!

Down a Dark Hall (2018) & Very Bad People by Kit Frick

I think boarding schools are the perfect place for spooky mysteries. Very Bad People is the perfect dark academia thriller for any mystery fan!

The Vampire Diaries (2009) & Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste

No matter what you might think, everyone loves a good vampire story. Reluctant Immortals follows Bee Mason and Lucy Westenera, undead immortals living in Los Angeles in 1967. When their attackers return to San Francisco, Bee and Lucy must work together to seek revenge on the men who turned them and countless others before it is too late. This is a story you do not want to miss!

The Haunting of Hill House (2018) & The Children on the Hill by Jennifer McMahon

Inspired by Frankenstein, this eerie tale features a haunted psychiatric hospital and explores the mysteries of childhood. Just like Hill House, this tale will keep you checking the darkness for what monsters lurk beyond.

The Magicians (2015) & Book of Night by Holly Black

I love dark urban fantasies and Holly Black’s new book is no exception. I read this entire book in one sitting and I guarantee you will too! (I highly suggest going into it without knowing much!)

Blood Quantum (2019) & And Then I Woke Up by Malcolm Devlin

It wouldn’t be a horror list without a classic zombie story. Set in a world dealing with a spreading disease, Delvin’s novel explores the idea of false narratives and a world set in uncertainty.

Gretel & Hansel: A Grim Fairy Tale (2020) & A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow

There’s nothing scarier than dark fairy tales. A Mirror Mended is a feminist retelling of the Evil Queen from Snow White. Filled with action, adventure, and romance, this installment in the Fractured Fables series is one you do not want to miss!

Check out some of these great books, movies and shows this week and remember to grab Unstable wherever books are sold!
