If you haven’t seen or read To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before — the Netflix movie based on the first book in Jenny Han’s coming-of-age trilogy —  you should do so immediately! It’s such a well-rounded story about family, friendships, relationships and finding yourself and your strength. I’ve carefully curated three songs for some of the major players in the story – I hope you enjoy my selects! Note: These playlists are exclusive to the movie/first book.

Lara Jean Covey

Lara Jean’s playlist is about her finding happiness and maybe not even realizing it or being super open to it at first. She dreams about things, not sure if she really wants to feel them. Ultimately, she has the time of her life. Little 80s film nod in there for good measure!

“Dog Days Are Over” — Florence + The Machine

Happiness hit her, like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds

“I Have A Dream” — Lily James (Mamma Mia 2 soundtrack)

I have a dream
A fantasy
To help me through reality

“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” — Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes

Now I’ve had the time of my life
No, I never felt like this before
Yes, I swear it’s the truth
And I owe it all to you

Margot Covey

Margot definitely doesn’t wear her emotions on her sleeve, but she has strong emotional ties to her family and to Josh. Her mother’s passing powerfully impacted her and has made her strong, caring and responsible. She’ll stand by her sisters through anything and everything, which is something I love about her!

“Paradise” — Coldplay

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach

“Photograph” – Ed Sheeran

Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes
But it’s the only thing that I know

“Stand By You” – Rachel Platten

And hurt, I know you’re hurting, but so am I
And love, if your wings are broken
Borrow mine so yours can open too
‘Cause I’m gonna stand by you

Kitty Covey

Kitty is sort of the wild child of the family. She definitely doesn’t want to be told to sit still and look pretty and she is certainly all about girl power! Kitty may have interesting ways of showing it, but she loves her sisters dearly.

“Sit Still, Look Pretty” – Daya

Oh I don’t know what you’ve been told
But this gal right here’s gonna rule the world
Yeah, that is where I’m gonna be because I wanna be
No, I don’t wanna sit still, look pretty

“Most Girls” – Hailee Steinfeld

Most girls are smart and strong and beautiful
Most girls work hard, go far, we are unstoppable

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” – Cyndi Lauper

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun
Oh, girls—they wanna have fun

Bonus Covey Family Song

Home” – Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Oh, home, let me come home
Home is whenever I’m with you

Josh Sanderson

Josh is heartbroken over Margot initially, though he does realize why things had to end. I chose Story of My Life and Landslide because of how Josh is still a friend to Lara Jean and that he’ll be there for the Coveys and they’ll be there for him, too.

“Like Gold” – Vance Joy

Gold, when you see me
Hi, if you need me
Babe, that’s the way it was
That’s the history

“Story of My Life” – One Direction

The story of my life
I take her home
I drive all night
To keep her warm
And time is frozen

“Landslide” – Oh Wonder

So when you’re caught in a landslide
I’ll be there for you, I’ll be there for you
And in the rain, give you sunshine
I’ll be there for you, I’ll be there for you

Peter Kavinsky

Oh, Peter. Peter, Peter, Peter. These songs speak for themselves. Who else just loves Peter?

“How You Get The Girl” – Taylor Swift

And then you say,
I want you for worse or for better
I would wait forever and ever
Broke your heart, I’ll put it back together
I would wait forever and ever
And that’s how it works
That’s how you get the girl

“Somebody To You” – The Vamps

I used to be so tough
Never really gave enough
And then you caught my eye
Giving me the feeling of a lightning strike

“What You Wanted” – OneRepublic

I’ll find the places where you hide
I’ll be the dawn on your worst night
The only thing left in your life
Yeah, I would kill for you, that’s right
If that’s what you wanted
