There are few things in this world that make me more nervous than a first date. And because I struggle with severe day-to-day anxiety, that’s saying something! However, there’s something that always calms me down before going out with someone new: music. I love listening to it, and I love sharing it with the people I care about. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite songs with you! Whether you’re going on a first date, or writing first date scene in a book, these ten songs are sure to break the ice and inspire.

Skyline by LOYALS

Skyline is one of my favorite songs right now! This song is a perfect ode to falling for someone hard and fast, and to those inevitable, instant connections we can feel with others. Sometimes, you just know: “This isn’t typical, this is magical.”

Boyfriend by Walk the Moon

Okay, so this is more of a meet-cute song than a first date song, but its catchy tune and adorably awkward lyrics perfectly capture the nerves of a first date. “Boyfriend” is packed full of 80s movie and song references, along with nervous lyrics about making a good first impression.

New Religion by The Heydaze

Sometimes, life can get monotonous: we get stuck “working and watching television” rather than living life to the fullest. “New Religion” is about finding someone who makes life exciting again. The lyrics and beat remind me of exploring a big city at night with someone special by my side.

Million Bucks by Smallpools

Smallpools’s music and lyrics always get me up and dancing and they have since I first discovered the band in 2014! “Million Bucks” is a catchy, optimistic song about finding love in LA, and about how meeting the right person can make you happier than you ever imagined!

Eyes Wide by Handsome Ghost

This song has all the friends to lovers vibes! “Eyes Wide” is about escaping the monotony of day-to-day life and heading out on an adventure. The synth backtrack and breathy vocals make this song completely addictive and perfect to sing along to on a first date!

Into the Wilderness by Early Hours

“It’s meant to be, my dear!” This song is about getting lost in someone you love, and exploring a world of adventure together. I’m obsessed with the catchy lyrics, and they’re perfect to sing along to when driving down the highway!

What I Like by Con Chill Bro

For me, this song is a throwback to college, where many people go on lots of first dates. I’m obsessed with the drumbeat in this song; it makes me want to get up and dance every time!

Stay the Night by Jukebox the Ghost

This song has meet-cute AND first date vibes. There are a million reasons to love it, but my personal favorites are lyrics like “still have the napkin with your number” and the badass piano solo near the end of the song!

Staring Contest by Matters of State

“Staring Contest” sounds and feels like a first love in a 1990s summer. With overlapping vocals and lyrics that speak of blacktops and chain-link fences, this song is the perfect thing to put on the aux cord.

Feels by Drive!Drive!

Though meeting a stranger in a bar or a club may not technically be a date, Drive!Drive!’s song “Feels” makes it seem like one. And, even better: if you love the original version of “Feels,” you’ll love their newly released “Feels 2.0” as well! I’ve listened to both dozens of times and still can’t choose a favorite.

There you have it: ten songs to break the ice on your first date or inspire a scene! Listen to the full playlist yourself here.
