Spooky Sweet Halloween Candy and Book Pairings

[Note from Frolic: This post is brought to you by Kensington Books and A Ghost in Shining Armor by Therese Beharrie. Find your new favorite sweet treat below.]

Spooky season is upon us. When you’re not enjoying scary classics on the big screen, we have a list of cozy (and creepy) reads for you. No scary book is complete without some snacks — and we’ve got you covered there. From crunch to pop to smack, these candies are just what you need to get in the Halloween mood.

Pretzel M&Ms and A Ghost in Shining Armor by Therese Beharrie

The next time your Hinge date ghosts you, whip out this read. A Ghost in Shining Armor tells the story of ghost whisperer Gemma Daniels, who meets her match: Levi Walker. While Gemma is used to helping her ghost friends with their unfinished business, Levi is on a mission to help Gemma with her unfinished business — with her long-lost sibling. Read with a bag of pretzel M&Ms. You won’t be able to put this one down, so it’s best to go for family size.

Bubble gum and A Letter to Three Witches by Elizabeth Bass

Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn, and cauldron bubble. This witchy read goes best with a pack (or two, or three) of bubble gum. You’ll meet a trio of witches who run into trouble when their love lives go haywire. With messy love lives come messy magic lives. It’s a whirlwind of spells, magic, romance, drama, and laughs. Buckle up. And bubble up.

Hershey’s chocolate bar and Witch Please by Ann Aguirre

What do you get when you mix a virgin baker with a witch who avoids love at all costs? Some sort of spark — we’ll let you figure that one out for yourself. Witch Please is relatable for anyone who has experienced relationship trauma and wished they had the superpowers to erase it all. There’s a lot going on in this novel, so you’ll want to sit back with a nice bar of chocolate and a cozy fall blanket. Enjoy!

Candied popcorn and Murder at the Book Club by Betsy Reavley

Bookworms turned… murderers? This spooky read by Betsy Reavley investigates a suspicious and unsolvable murder that leads back to none other than… a book club. We follow DCI Barrett and DI Palmer who are trying to get to the bottom of this brutal killing. Will they find the murderer? Is it more than one? Was it planned? This thriller is a page-turner worthy of candied popcorn — you choose the flavor.

Peppermint patties and Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie

Thirteen-year-old Joyce is the life of the party… until she turns up dead. Okay, she wasn’t exactly the life of the party. At a Halloween party, Joyce claims she’s witnessed a murder — but no one believes her. She leaves the party, only to be found hours later… dead. Sure to give you chills, Hallowe’een Party is perfectly paired with peppermint patties. Bonus: They’re even better if you freeze them.

Candy corn and The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

If you’re into books about book clubs, we’ve got another one for you. The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires takes place in a small suburban town that happens to have a robust population of bookworms. Patricia Campbell looks forward to book club every week, but one week hits different — when their small town welcomes a new face who may or may not be a modern-day Ted Bundy. Suspicious, Patricia takes matters into her own hands, leading the group of book-lovers to pivot their weekly meetings from literature to criminal investigation. Snag a bag of candy corn for this spook-tacular novel!

Skittles and The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston

Ghostwriter meets ghostlover in this romantic read. When Florence Day goes through a breakup and a terrible loss, cynic becomes her middle name. In her eyes, romance — and basically anything good — is dead. That changes when she finds a ghost on her doorstep with all kinds of questions about why he’s there. This power-packed read is perfectly paired with a flavor-packed bag of skittles.
