What do action movies and romance novels have in common? They can both make our hearts pound, whether from the suspense, or from the tension we feel just before our OTPs lock lips. And no matter if you’re reading or watching, that little thrill in your stomach can be a great way to add some excitement to your week. With that in mind (and July fireworks in the sky), we’ve compiled a list of summer thrills that are certain to make your heart pound.
The Last Goodnight by Kat Martin
This romantic suspense series has something for everyone! First up, you’re going to want to check out The Last Goodnight. This high-stakes novel is full of secrets, scandals and suspense. After his estranged wife is killed, Kade is determined to track down her killer. Sparks fly as he teams up with private investigator Eleanor Bowman and the pair enter a world of glitz, glamor and intrigue. And when Ellie becomes the killer’s next target, Kade becomes more determined than ever to solve the case. Come to this one for the intrigue and stay for the romance that will hook you from Kade and Ellie’s first meeting.
The Last Mile by Kat Martin
If treasure hunting is more your speed, you’re going to want to pick up Kat Martin’s The Last Mile as well! Though this is the second in a series, you can absolutely check this one out as a standalone. When someone breaks into Abigail’s house, she immediately knows what they’re after: a detailed treasure map made by her late grandfather. Though she’d love nothing more than to pursue the treasure alone, she knows she needs help. Enter talented (and sexy) treasure hunter Gage Logan. As they set off on a treasure hunt together, they become entangled in a web of romance, suspense and danger. This book is perfect for anyone who has ever dreamed of coming across a treasure map.
The Summer I Turned Pretty
Based on the novel of the same name by phenomenal author Jenny Han, this new Amazon show will make your heart flutter in all the right ways. 16-year-old Belly has always spent the summer with her family friends Conrad and Jeremiah. But they’ve always been just that: friends. This summer is different, though: Belly’s more grown up, and both brothers have begun to see her as more. This show is pure fun and wish fulfillment as Belly finds herself caught in a love triangle she never expected.
Mr. Malcolm’s List
Based on the novel of the same name, this movie is now in theaters! Grab your popcorn and settle in for the swooniest summer romance you’ll see this week. In 19th-century England, a wealthy, young lady named Julia engages in courtship with Mr. Malcolm, a mysterious, wealthy suitor, unaware that he has a list of qualities required of a future wife. This regency romance has all of your favorite quotes in a regency setting. Grab your soda and get ready to feel your heart skip a beat or three.
Cool for the Summer by Dahlia Adler
Last but not least is this queer YA romance that will make your heart pound in all the right ways. Based on Grease, Adler’s novel follows Lara as she finds herself torn between the boy she’s always wanted and the girl she’s fallen in love with. Eeek, right!? The perfect, heartwarming beach read for your July.
