Trope Rec Tuesday: Surprise…Baby!

To explain a little about what this post will be about, I’m taking the intro I did for the last one: In every romance book you read there are tropes or archetypes. You can also see them in shows, movies, plays, etc. Romantic tropes are everywhere, and they are fabulous. I adore them. I adore some of them and I always tend to find my favorite ones in romance books so I can enjoy them more. I decided to do a sort of Trope Tuesday piece where I will be talking about many tropes and recommend you all some of my favorites that fit.

What is a trope? Urban Dictionary explains it best I think: “Despite the erroneous definitions already published here, trope on the interwebs really refers to an often overused plot device. It can also be described as another variation on the same theme. TV shows, movies, comics, games, anime’, & books are full of tropes & many rabid fan-sites now name & track said tropes with a self-explanatory title for each one.” We can name a few: accidental pregnancy, best friends to lovers, sibling’s best friend, marriage of convenience, and so many more for sure. Your favorite couples? They probably got a trope too! It’s always so nice to realize or find out your favorite romance trope and keep searching for books with the same theme.

Another well-known trope in Romancelandia is surprise baby. Many will say they hate it, many will say it’s their favorite. As with any other trope I have already mentioned in these weekly posts, they have both fans and not so fans and that’s okay. I understand not all tropes are for everyone, like I also have tropes I dislike and I know many enjoy them!

So with surprise baby, I really enjoy it and I really don’t know why. Is it because there is a baby in the plot? The tension? The second chance romance? The relationship that develops after finding out? There can be many factors, but in all, the surprise baby trope definitely makes for a great romance. I don’t really read or know a lot of them, so if you have more books with this trope, please send them my way. I so want to find more and support them. I pretty much know that Harlequin has like a full imprint for them, right?  I don’t know about babies on the covers just yet tho, do tell me if you love or hate babies on covers!

I have for you a really great list with some fabulous characters and some fun and cute babies as well.  And if you have never read a romance novel with a surprise baby, I really hope you give these or any you find interesting a chance! But if it’s not your thing, it’s totally okay as well.

Surprise Baby, Second Chance by Therese Beharrie

I’m a Therese Beharrie fan for sure. I’ve read many of hers and Surprise Baby, Second Chance is a book you cannot miss. It has also all the best tropes together, seriously: estranged spouses, stranded together on an island, surprise baby. What more could you ask for?

Three Little Words by Melissa Blue

Melissa Blue is an author everyone has to read if you love romance novels. I haven’t yet read any of her books but definitely need to start STAT. Three Little Words is actually a pretty good book to start with: After a one-night stand, Porter receives some big news from Iris, his sister’s best friend. He always envisioned himself with a wife and kids and he is ready to take on the role. But Iris only wants him for his body…

Savannah’s Secrets by Reese Ryan

Prepare yourself for this revenge romance… You probably have seen me talk about this book and I do it because IT’S SO GOOD. Savannah infiltrates the Abbott’s family bourbon empire as their events manager because they once upon a time took half of her grandfather’s company from them. After meeting the Abbotts and Blake, the heir, she isn’t so sure the details are the right ones… and after one stormy weekend, she’s pregnant with his child!

It does also have them stranded together because there is a big storm one weekend and as she goes home, a bridge went down or something like that, so she stays with him and well.. Dot dot dot.

Royal Heirs Required by Cat Schield

A royal marriage later… this is probably the only one in this list that has the surprise baby but the kids aren’t the heroine’s. This prince finds out he is father to twins! And Olivia is very welcoming but her agreement conceals something more… you will just have to wait and read to find out for more.
