Writing sex scenes is hard.
Since my first book, UNEXPECTED EDEN, I’ve written a lot of them and have received a fair number of compliments on how they turned out, but every single one of them took their fair share out of me.
My guess is this is because (IMHO) a good love scene requires a solid mix of emotion, sensory description, creative or fresh “choreography,” and, of course, stellar dirty talk. Fresh choreography alone is tricky. I’ve written fourteen books now with an average of three to four sex scenes each. That’s fifty-six scenes where I found myself thinking, “What haven’t my couples tried yet, and how can something new fit in the story?” Add in finding ways to convey emotion and the sights, smells, and sounds in a love scene without a bunch of purple prose that will make my editor roll her eyes and…well…I’m pretty exhausted when I’m done writing one.
So, yeah. I appreciate the good ones and the work that goes into them. Today, I want to share with you not just one passage that’s particularly amazing, but a book that’s full of them—Kresley Cole’s THE PROFESSIONAL.
Holy cow, y’all. When I first read this book, Kresley released it as a three-part serial with each book releasing one month apart. Of course, it’s available in one book now, but I tore through those monthly installments faster than any book I’ve read before or since. Yes, the other two books in the series are equally yummy, but nothing tops the first one.
Nothing.
Don’t believe me? Here are some of my favorites:
“With his accent thicker than I’d heard it, he rasped, “Would you want a man like me to take your mouth?” His thumb ring glinted when he gave another slow stroke.
Good question. I answered myself when words spilled from my lips: “Try it and see.”
“You think I’d stop with a kiss?”
“You assume I’d want you to?”
***
“I told you that if I was your first lover, I’d be your last,” he said, his fingers making slow, slippery circles. “I told you that I’d kill any man who touched what was mine. Do you understand me?”
***
He positioned me back on his lap, his engorged shaft in front of my mons. It stood like an idol to be worshipped, making my mouth water and my hips rock. I couldn’t keep myself from grinding against the damp base.
“Grasp it.”
I did.
“Stroke it. Learn it. My c%&@ is the only one you’ll ever need—or know.”

For the record, it not only took me forever to narrow down to just those quotes, but I got sidetracked and ended up re-reading all my favorite parts AGAIN. #FanGirlProblems

Down and Dirty by Rhenna Morgan is out today!
The Men of Haven: fierce passion, unyielding loyalty.
Especially when it comes to their women.
A powerful man
Axel McKee abandoned his musical career years ago in favor of becoming a power player on the music scene. His dreams of the spotlight are over—and he’s better off for it. Working with his Haven brothers and building their empire is enough for him.
One who commanded attention with nothing more than a look
And then came Lizzy. A dynamic, beautiful powerhouse of a performer unlike any he’s seen or heard before. Her presence leaps off stage and into the heart of anyone who watches her sing. Axel wants her. Wants to help her and collaborate with her… But more than anything, he wants to be with her.
And every ounce of his attention was locked on her
Two things are immediately obvious: Lizzy’s been burned before, and earning her trust will be Axel’s biggest challenge yet. If he can get this fierce, stubborn, talented woman to see the passion and care that he’s offering, he might get a chance at a new dream—sharing the spotlight with the woman he loves.
