[Note from Frolic: We’re so excited to welcome author S.M. Soto to the site today. She’s talking all things romantic suspense!]
Hello! Thanks for joining me today to talk about a handful of my favorite Romantic Suspense films. If you guys don’t know me, I’m S.M. Soto and I write Contemporary, New Adult and Romantic Suspense novels which seems fitting for today’s category.
It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of the Romantic Suspense genre—and that’s in all aspects. As an author, I quite enjoy putting my readers emotions through the wringer. It makes for a better romance in my opinion. What’s the fun if everything is smooth sailing, am I right?
Nowadays, between writing and working, I don’t really have much time to watch TV, but when I do, I always make time for my favorites. There is just something about the danger that’s threaded in between the thrill of a blooming romance that has always been so captivating to me. Movies are a bit more difficult to narrow down than books, but I think the list I have for you all today is as balanced in the romantic suspense movie genre as it’s going to get.
1. Safe Haven
First up is Safe Haven with Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough. Easily one of my favorites because of its storyline and of course, Josh Duhamel, because, well, Josh Freaking Duhamel.
Woman on the run from a crime and/or an abusive partner and ends up in a small beach town? Count me in!
If you’re looking for a film with just enough suspense that will keep you guessing and heartwarming scenes that’ll fill your chest with warmth, this one is the perfect fit! Oh, and did I mention Josh Duhamel is a single parent in this one? *swoons*
2. Mr & Mrs. Smith
Next, we have a movie that really needs no introduction. It’s one I love to hate.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that I will literally stop and drop whatever adulting I’m doing in favor of this movie. Have a load of laundry to fold? Well, that’s too bad. Dishes in the sink? I. Don’t. Care. On a deadline for a book that needs to be finished ASAP? Angie and Brad need my attention much, much more.
And I know a lot of you are probably wondering why I love this movie as much as I do. Well, that’s because it’s action, adventure, suspense and romance all rolled into one film. It’s my kryptonite, people! But I will say it’s definitely one of those films I hate myself for loving because I’m a huge, huge, Jennifer Aniston fan. Is my love for this movie a betrayal? I guess we may never know.
3. Nocturnal Animals
For my third pick, I decided to throw a wild card at you guys. Nocturnal Animals.
Yup. That’s right.
And I know some will argue that this movie isn’t romantic suspense in the least, but ma’am, I beg to differ. Though it may not be one of your go-to movies, Nocturnal Animals is truly a suspenseful ride that still has me asking questions each time I watch it. My love for Jake Gyllenhal and Amy Adams knows no bounds and their performance in this one is seriously incredible. If you’re looking for something a little darker than the previous movies mentioned, Nocturnal Animals is perfect if you want to be clutching the edge of your seat in panic, wondering what in the world will happen next.
4. Red Riding Hood
Up next we have Red Riding Hood with the amazing Amanda Seyfried. I know what you’re thinking, “Really, this movie?” And yes, really. I remember deciding to watch this movie on a whim, thinking it would suck, but color me surprised when I realized it was right up my alley.
Amanda plays the iconic role of Red Riding Hood who has a sordid love affair with the big bad wolf. Do I have you hooked yet, because honestly, the movie could’ve ended there for me and I still would’ve been happy. Not only is the plot twist in this one major, but I died for the love triangle and the suspense! The scenes are hot, the suspense is ever-present, and her love interests aren’t too bad to look at either. This is a must-see if you haven’t watched already!
5. Practical Magic
The fifth and final movie is…*drum roll, please* Practical Magic. This movie has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid and it’s one of the only movie’s I make a point to watch at least five times a year. Yeah, that’s right. I said five.
If there’s one thing everyone knows about me (or rather, should know.) is my obsession with witches. I don’t know when it started but even as a child, I’ve loved witches and pretty much any movies featuring witches or witchcraft. (Not really sure what that says about me as a person.)
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play sisters and, you guessed it, witches, it this movie. Raised by their aunts in a small town, the sisters grow up avoiding witchcraft because of the prejudice they receive in their town and later, have to face a curse which threatens to prevent them from finding lasting love. Filled with romance, suspense and magical bits, this movie is one of my all-time favorites.
Thank you so much for allowing me to share and bore you guys with my favorite romantic suspense films. After writing this, I feel the need to binge watch these movies all over again. And hey, hopefully you will, too!
