Trope Rec Tuesday: No Strings Attached but Somehow I Fell For You?
By Silvana Reyes
To explain a little about what this post will be about, I’m taking the intro I did for the last one: In every romance book you read there are tropes or archetypes. You can also see them in shows, movies, plays, etc. Romantic tropes are everywhere, and they are fabulous. I adore them. I adore some of them and I always tend to find my favorite ones in romance books so I can enjoy them more. I decided to do a sort of Trope Tuesday piece where I will be talking about many tropes and recommend you all some of my favorites that fit.
What is a trope? Urban Dictionary explains it best I think: “Despite the erroneous definitions already published here, trope on the interwebs really refers to an often overused plot device. It can also be described as another variation on the same theme. TV shows, movies, comics, games, anime', & books are full of tropes & many rabid fan-sites now name & track said tropes with a self-explanatory title for each one.” We can name a few: accidental pregnancy, best friends to lovers, sibling’s best friend, marriage of convenience, and so many more for sure. Your favorite couples? They probably got a trope too! It’s always so nice to realize or find out your favorite romance trope and keep searching for books with the same theme.
No strings attached trope is such a fun trope. Why? Because you already know it always leads to more. It starts off as maybe once a week or just when they feel like it. But then they start talking on the phone, texting each other because something good happen in their daily lives, they start spending so much time together, feelings start to develop and they invite them to spend time with their families. Even their families know something is going on!!!! I tell you, it’s so fun to see them/read them still saying to everyone around them “it’s not serious, we’re only just spending some time together” when we all know that’s. Not. it.
I love when they start caring about each other but the other one doesn’t know because obviously the big issue is not communicating their feelings, but I always find that fascinating. I feel with them as well, so when one of them is obviously bummed out because hey they just found out they love their no-strings-attached person and possibly they don’t love them back so they get sad, AND I GET SAD TOO. But I always try to remember that romance books always end in happy endings so I know that by the end, something good is going to happen!
Let’s start talking about books, alright?
I obviously have to mention this one. Even the name is the trope name! It is also really fabulous and great for your heart, I believe. I absolutely adored it and you will fall in love with it too. This is about Carla, she wants to find a no strings attached relationship and she thinks she has found it in Dante, five years her junior. But what happens when Dante thinks she’s the one for him?
Dante is really someone you should all meet.
Hollis is the one to read if you want cute and lovely F/F novellas. The Paths We Choose puts Lily as the protagonist and she’s such an honest character. She doesn’t believe she could have a relationship but in time, we see her grow with Mayte, the love interest. Also there is female friendships, which it’s just wonderful and always needed in stories.
Fake dating, friends with benefits, love? Feels Like Summer is a wild ride but it’s a beautiful one. It all starts as a five-minute girlfriend and soon turns into a friends with benefits/no strings attached relationship. But you see it. You see the change when it happens, I swear. It’s such a sweet moment when you realize: yes, they just have fallen in love. Feels Like Summer is such a summer-y feel good novel so if you’re over winter or if on your side of the world it’s summer right now, go you and go read this, you’ll get the best emotions in the world.
G.L. Tomas are my favorite author duo and everyone should hype their books. Haven’t read them? Well, this is a perfect book to start with. It has an Afro-Cuban protagonist who lives for the moment and never looks back. Tattooed hero who you will fall in love with pretty easily and pretty early on. No joke. Every single character puts something on the table and they all aren’t there just to fill holes and dark areas. It’s a story that will make your heart fill up.
Trigger warning: the main character has cancer.
