Lit Wallflowers: Grayson Family – Jewel – One Favor Changed It All

A fake marriage turned real, real quick in “Jewel” by Beverly Jenkins!

Jewel Crowley made a promise to her mother to take care of her father and her brothers until they marry. That promise was broken when Eli Grayson needed a favor.

In order for an investor to get Eli’s gazette back in business, he needed to be married yesterday. Jewel agreed after some begging, but they didn’t expect the announcement of the gazette being saved included the mention of a “Mr. and Mrs. Grayson.”

Reputations were important in a small town, even in a progressive town like Grayson Grove, so Jewel agreed to marry Eli with a plan to divorce him once the buyer and investor, Mr. Hicks, leaves town.

Mr. Hicks decided to build a home in Grayson Grove so Eli either had to fess up or stay married. With a catch like Jewel, he chose the latter and courted his own wife.

But relationships are never perfect! Exes ride into town, trouble lurks, and bonds get tested. Join us as we discuss how one favor changed it all!

Wit Beyond Measure: Emma – The 2020 Film Adaptation

This week Catrina and Elle discuss the 2020 Emma adaptation starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, and Bill Nighy.

How did this adaptation hold up against the book? Was it more entertaining, or just as boring as some of the novel’s chapters? Did the actors get the characters right, or did they miss the mark? Most importantly, did we finally get romance?

From two hosts who weren’t big fans of the novel, it might surprise you to hear what they thought of this adaptation.
