Your Summer Playlist: Seven Yummy YA Romance & Song Pairings
By Robby Weber (aka RobbyReads)
The smell of sunscreen, the taste of iced coffee and the sand that gets everywhere: your toes, your car seats and the bottom of all your tote bags. There are so many things to love about summer and for me, two of the biggest are books and music. So, it only seemed right to pair two of my favorite things and create a soundtrack.
Below, some of my favorite YA books are paired with a song. The books and the songs mean a lot to me, and I hope you love them as much as I do!
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
Perfect Pair: "Delicate" by Taylor Swift
Standout Line: “My reputation's never been worse, so you must like me for me…”
Why They Pair So Well: Andie’s emotions are really delicate, and she’s not used to being vulnerable or out of control of them.
Vibes: Ambitious, cautious, new
I Love It Because: It’s such a nice story about growing up and realizing life just happens sometimes and that’s okay. The friendships and family relationships are realistic and powerful. Plus, adorable dogs and a cute, geeky guy who is easily one of my favorite book guys ever. I don’t want to write too much, because this book is best just experienced authentically as you read. It’s summer and it’s perfect.
Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian
Perfect Pair: "In Between" by Kelsea Ballerini
Standout Line: “Sometimes I play grown up, and sometimes I play pretend.”
Why They Pair So Well: Amelia is still figuring things out. She starts off really idealistic and, while she keeps her wonder and some aspects of her innocence, she starts to see things a bit more realistically and starts to figure out how the new can coexist with the old.
Vibes: Innocent, caring, learning
I Love It Because: The story is sugary and features such strong women. There’s this lovely balance between innocent, young eyes and strength in decisions and adapting to change. The setting is lush, relaxed and familiar. This book feels pure and good. The friendships are genuine and the romance is enchanting. I cannot say enough how much I love this book.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
Perfect Pair: "Starving" by Hailee Steinfeld
Standout Line: “Yeah, something inside me's changed, I was so much younger yesterday.”
Why They Pair So Well: Lara Jean is opening up her heart in a way she hasn’t before: in real life. She’s experiencing things and learning and coming into her own. She’s finding out she can do things she thought she couldn’t and she’s also changed by love.
Vibes: Growing, affectionate, changing
I Love It Because: My favorite aspect is probably the family dynamic, personally. Mostly because I am the oldest child with two younger sisters. We can relate to them so easily, it’s great to see their journey and feel the warmth of the siblings. I also love the romantic aspect. Swoonworthy guys plus baking plus tender friendships and family relationships! Need I say more?
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
Perfect Pair: "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer
Standout Line: “Takes one to know one, yeah, you beat me at my own damn game.”
Why They Pair So Well: Simon and Baz are hot and cold and you’re never quite sure if it’ll end in flames or not…
Vibes: Chaotic, vibrant, passionate
I Love It Because: It stemmed from Fangirl, to start, which I love with my whole heart. The characters are so incredible and the world is so vivacious and colorful! I don’t reread fantasy books often, and this is on the larger end of the YA books I’ve read, but this one is an exception. It’s just so lovable and gripping and just… FUN. I love it so, so much.
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
Perfect Pair: "Wake Up" by The Vamps
Standout Line: “I know sometimes we'll be afraid, but no more playing safe, my dear.”
Why They Pair So Well: Simon is learning to be okay with unapologetically being himself.
Vibes: Fresh, new, accepting
I Love It Because: Oh gosh. What do I not love about Simon and his story? His relationships and his humor and voice are so authentic and bright. The story is so full of hope, wit and sharp observations about acceptance, love and growing up.
Running With Lions by Julian Winters
Perfect Pair: "Whatever It Takes" by Imagine Dragons
Standout Line: “Whatever it takes, 'cause I love the adrenaline in my veins.”
Why They Pair So Well: The boys are all energetic and they’re all in it to win it.
Vibes: Energetic, hopeful, strong
I Love It Because: The characters, the setting and everything in between. Julian Winters’ writing is so fun and the cast in this book is diverse, quick-witted, charming and youthful. The heat of the summer, the rush of the game and the ups and downs of the rivalries and romances. This book was refreshing and the perfect mix of smooth sailing and high-voltage electricity.
Save the Date by Morgan Matson
Perfect Pair: "Home" by One Direction
Standout Line: “You'll never feel like you're alone, I'll make this feel like home.”
Why They Pair So Well: There are a few ways it’s symbolic, but I’ll just say Charlie will be home wherever her family and friends are.
Vibes: Nostalgic, comfortable, loving
I Love It Because: I knew I’d love it since it is a Morgan Matson book, PLUS it was pitched as Father of the Bride meets Sixteen Candles. I mean, come on. That combination is a sure way to my heart. It exceeded my high expectations, though, in providing a huge cast of lovable, difficult and real characters who I really cared about. The family was so engaging and dynamic, they worked seamlessly with the wild plot and hilarious bumps along the way. Somehow this book felt so nostalgic for me, like I’d grown up with these characters in this house. I love it more than words can describe!
