What to Read

Alexandra Ivy’s Desert Island Books

[Note From Frolic: We have a thing for novellas. A BIG thing. In the next installment of an ongoing series, we bring you a post from author Alexandra Ivy, whose novella ‘Sacrifice of Darkness‘ with our friends at 1001 Dark Nights is out now!]

I’m so excited to be included with 1001 Dark Nights and their fabulous authors, and to share my story Sacrifice of Darkness. Returning to the world of the Guardians of Eternity reminded me how much I love the characters. Especially my naughty gargoyle, Levet. It felt like a homecoming and I realized that there’s something eternally comforting about returning to old favorites. Which got me thinking about the books I read over and over and what it is that draws me back.

Below are a few of the books that I consider my Desert Island Keepers. These are the stories that bring me comfort during these difficult times and have a special place on my bookshelf.

Enjoy!

Alex

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

This is one of the first books I read that introduced me to romance, and what an introduction it was!! Charming characters, star-crossed lovers and a vibrant feel that captures the Regency era to perfection. I tumbled in love with Darcy even when he was proud and impossibly rude, but the way that Elisabeth cuts him down to size is sheer perfection. I re-read this classic at least once a year.

Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt

A beautiful gothic novel filled with foreboding and angst, this book truly swept me away the first time I read it. Holt is a master of using the settings of her novels as an integral part of the story. As I was reading I truly felt as if I was standing on the windswept cliffs of Cornwell, not sure whether to trust the dark, brooding hero or flee from him in terror.

The Belgariad Series by David Eddings

Although this series is considered in the high-fantasy genre, I’ve never read anyone who writes strong women better than David Eddings. Long before there was Buffy or Tomb Raider, he wrote a character named Polgara who truly kicked-ass. The powerful sorceress who not only helped to save the world, but she was capable of being a nurturing mother-figure and wife. I still want to grow up and be Polgara!

Now she writes a wide variety of genres that include paranormal, erotica, and romantic suspense.

Sacrifice of Darkness by Alexandra Ivy, out now!

Javad has one rule. No fighting pits.

It doesn’t matter that the savage battles have been a tradition among demons for eons. As the manager of the Viper’s Nest in Vegas, his word is law. Period. Then he hears rumors that some fool has dared to create a fighting pit in the middle of the desert. He goes in search of the hidden location, only to realize too late it’s a trap by his former master Vynom. The powerful vampire is determined to force Javad to fight once again. This time to the death.

Terra is a rare fey creature known as a Seraf. Long ago she’d been captured by Vynom and forced to heal the fighters he used in his pits. Javad had rescued her, and she’d given him a medallion. If he ever needed her, all he had to do was to speak her name and the magic would lead her to him. When she hears his call she doesn’t hesitate to rush to his rescue. Even when it means returning to the dark violence that still haunts her dreams.

Can they escape the nightmare that nearly destroyed them in the past? And if they survive, are they willing to sacrifice the duties that have pulled them apart to battle for a future together?
