What to Read

Back to Forks: Top Three Reasons I’m Excited for Twilight: Midnight Sun

When the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer first came out, I remember being in long book slump at the time. One of my close friends gave me a copy of the book when I went to visit her in New York City, and the rest is history.

It doesn’t matter if you were Team Edward or Team Jacob, the books were certainly a fun escape. While some might tag the series as controversial at times, one cannot deny that it has a certain lure to it and it also reached millions of fans who could not get enough of the paranormal themes and the intriguing story.

I’m a believer in reading what makes you happy and just enjoying books as a whole, so when I found out Midnight Sun was coming out, the excitement was real. I cannot wait to get my copy on August 4, 2020 and here’s why.

#1 The Book Synopsis Promises Edward’s Point of View

As the synopsis reads, “This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting beautiful, mysterious Bella is both the most intriguing and unnerving event he has experienced in his long life as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?

In Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer transports us back to world that has captivated millions of readers and, drawing on the classic myth of Hades and Persephone, brings us an epic novel about the profound pleasures and devastating consequences of immortal love.”

Let’s just say I cannot wait to get into Edward’s thoughts to see how he viewed Bella and what his thoughts were when he met her and during all those classic Twilight scenes. Seeing his perspective is something I’m certainly intrigued by and cannot wait for.

#2 We Can Proudly Dust off the Movies and Twilight Merch

When Twilight came out, I had the opportunity to interview Taylor Lautner for The Miami Herald where I was an editor and journalist before the films came out. I’ll never forget his pure excitement for the film and how happy he was to be a part of it.

It seems fans were just as excited to see the films come to life. They rushed to their local Hot Topic to get merch. From tees to Barbie dolls to board games and FUNKO Pops, the movies certainly garnered a lot of merch and a unique fandom that could not get enough Twilight. I, for one, still have a couple of tees from back in the day that I plan to wear in August. Why not sport that Edward and Bella shirt for a trip to my local indie bookstore, Books and Books in Miami? I cannot wait to dive back into this world and get excited all over again while showing my support to the series and to my local bookshop at the same time.

#3 Despite the Haters, You Cannot Deny Twilight’s Impact on Pop Culture

Scroll through the internet and many a Twilight controversy you will find. My opinion is that anything that gets people into reading and into enjoying fiction is positive thing. One cannot deny the fun of digging into a series that you enjoy and finding a community to talk about it with.

Whatever your feelings about Twilight and its message might be, one cannot deny the fun of reading and I’m a believer that you should let people enjoy what they enjoy. You also cannot deny the impact this series has had on popular culture. I’m a believer in listening to all sides of the story and all the conversations about Twilight, but I’m also strong believer in letting others enjoy what they enjoy.

I, for one, cannot wait for Midnight Sun! Want to chat about the series? Are you excited for its release? Feel free to tweet me your thoughts at @AuroraMiami on Twitter. Happy reading!
