Donna: What was your inspiration behind All the Befores and the Magnolia Sound series?

Samantha: I’ve often looked at romances with older/seasoned couples as a secondary part of my books. Not that I’ve done it often, but there’ve been a couple of times where the hero or heroine’s single parent’s love life is a secondary plot. So when I started writing the Magnolia Sound series, that was always part of the plan. Once I put Susannah and Colton on the page together, however, I kind of wanted to give them their own story. Part of it was because they deserved more of a story, but also because I have some single friends who are my age and when I hear their stories of how it’s so much harder to find love, I kind of wanted to explore that.

How was writing this book different from others you’ve written?

This book was SO much fun to write because all of the thoughts and references the characters said and used were things that I totally related to! If anything, I think this book was easier to write because I understood the mindset of a couple in their mid-late forties than I do of couples in their twenties and early thirties. However, my biggest challenge came really from my concerns of how my readers would respond to my writing an older couple. It’s a definite change from my usual heroes and heroines but once I mentioned how I wanted to do this, the feedback was all positive! That gave me the final motivational push I needed to write All the Befores.

Let’s talk about this cover. How much input did you have and can you tell us a little about the design process?

The cover is all me! Lol! Since this is an indie series for me, I have total control over the cover designs and Alyssa is a dream to work with. I found the stock photo series of this couple and they totally fit what I envisioned for Susannah and Colton. We had to work to tweak the colors to use and the placement of the photo, but I am thrilled with the final result. Luckily, Alyssa doesn’t mind my level of crazy when I want to change things or when I ask her to adjust things. The biggest challenge was finding the right couple, but I love going on stock photo sites and searching. It’s a great distraction for when the words aren’t coming.

Can we expect more books with older characters from you?

I would LOVE to write more seasoned romances and I’m very excited to see what the response will be to All the Befores. I don’t know if I’m ready to make all my books have only seasoned heroes and heroines, but I can easily see myself transitioning to this at some point.
