What to Read

Five Great Audiobooks that Entertain and Inform

Whether we like to admit it or not, sometimes our daily lives get in the way of our reading time. (I know, the audacity of responsibility!) One way that I like to combat this is by picking up audiobooks! Here are five of my top favorite audiobooks that you should give a listen to!

Me by Elton John

In his first and only official autobiography, music icon Elton John reveals the truth about his extraordinary life, which is also the subject of the upcoming film Rocketman . The result is Me – the joyously funny, honest and moving story of the most enduringly successful singer/songwriter of all time. In Me Elton also writes powerfully about getting clean and changing his life, about finding love with David Furnish and becoming a father. In a voice that is warm, humble and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes. This is a story that will stay with you, by a living legend.

Narrated by Elton John himself and Rocketman star Taron Egerton, John’s memoir has an even more emotional impact as you hear the words come directly from their source!

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

A debut fantasy narrated by Bahni Turpin, the world of Children of Blood and Bone comes to life through an oral retelling with a fantastic narrator and incredible atmosphere!

On Writing by Stephen King

Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported near-fatal accident in 1999 — and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

There’s nothing more satisfying then listening to the King himself recount the events of his life as well as his inner secrets for his writing toolbox! A fantastic masterclass for anyone who’s interested in writing or for fans of Stephen King in general!

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

In his much-anticipated debut novel, Hank Green–cocreator of Crash Course, Vlogbrothers, and SciShow–spins a sweeping, cinematic tale about a young woman who becomes an overnight celebrity before realizing she’s part of something bigger, and stranger, than anyone could have possibly imagined.

The Carls just appeared.

Roaming through New York City at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship–like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor–April and her best friend, Andy, make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world–from Beijing to Buenos Aires–and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight.

Seizing the opportunity to make her mark on the world, April now has to deal with the consequences her new particular brand of fame has on her relationships, her safety, and her own identity. And all eyes are on April to figure out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us.

There is something so satisfying about listening to a book told from the author himself! Narrated by Hank Green and Kristen Sieh, this novel really packs a punch in drama, suspense and adventure! If your looking to listen to passionate and hilarious narrator’s, then check out this audiobook!

Circe by Madeline Miller

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

Read by Perdita Weeks, Circe is an amazing, reimagined version of the Odyssey where Circe leads focus as our main character. If you’re looking for a female centered retelling with an atmospheric audiobook, check this out!

These are only a few of my favorite audiobooks, but there are millions out there! Some of my favorite places to listen to audiobooks is through Amazon’s own Audible promotion, or from my local library! So plug those earphones in and get lost in an audiobook!
