Getting Hot and Steamy with my Favorite Cowboys by Lisa Renee Jones

Hello, Frolic Readers! I’m so excited to be here today to talk all things hot, steamy cowboys! I mean, it’s the heat of summer, what better way to enjoy the stifling heat than to heat it up a little further with those to-die-for men in their cowboy hats and laboriously working up a sweat?

So, why my insistence on the topic of cowboys, you might ask? Well, I have a new release this week: The Truth About Cowboys, and as evident by the title, it’s pretty prominently about cowboys. One sexy as sin cowboy to be specific—Jason Jenks, an ex-major league baseball pitcher, who returned home to his family ranch to help keep it running. But what Jason wasn’t counting on was meeting a troublesome city girl with a penchant for falling at his feet (and in the mud, don’t let your dirty mind get too excited). Jessica (the aforementioned klutz) and Jason were two characters that had me feeling every emotion when I wrote them. Jason with his brooding and intense attitude, and Jessica with her sassy and willful pride made for a hilarious antics and breathtaking passion.

These two got me thinking about the cowboys that were here first and set the bar for what we’ve come to expect from these proud and sinful men. So without further ado, I’m going to share five of my must-read cowboy romances!

Against the Rules by Linda Howard

This is one of my all-time favorites. While it is an older title, Rule Jackson taught me an alpha male is. This book still has me swooning after man years of re-reading it. It will forever remain on my shelf.

Anything by Lorelei James

One of the queens of cowboys. She does them like no other and brings so much heat, it will singe your e-reader. If you haven’t been introduced to her books yet, I would highly suggest beginning with the first book in the Rough Riders series: Long Hard Ride—the beginning of the McKay family stories. The cowboys in this family are going to steal your heart.

Texas! Lucky by Sandra Brown

This book will melt your heart. Yes, there is plenty of yummy cowboy time to be had, but this book also introduces suspense and hard-hitting reality that enraptured me from the first page.

The Cavanaugh Brothers by Laura Wright

A series that follows cowboy brothers—because what’s better than one cowboy, but FOUR?! Each book about a different brother and the woman who steals his heart will steal yours. Passion, a touch of suspense, and riveting stories to boot. This series has it all.

Reckless Love by Kelly Elliott

Reckless Love is the final book in her Cowboys and Angels series, and while I would recommend the entire series, this one stuck out to me. It’s poignant, story showcasing the passion or a couple who has to work harder at their relationship than most given the circumstances (I won’t spoil those 😊). But this book was touching, and it brought a level of reality to the romance that I found like a breath of fresh air. I was captivated.

And there it is, a wide range of swoon-worthy and delectable cowboys for your to devour! Speaking of devouring…I’ve got a rather sexy excerpt of The Truth About Cowboys that I’d love to share with you before I go to show you how a real cowboy kisses.

Jason…

By the time I’m at her door, it’s open and the stubborn woman is about to exit the truck, right into a river. “Wait, woman,” I shout, but she doesn’t wait. I’m already in motion, there just as her feet would sink, my arm wrapping her waist, lifting her, her body flush with mine, my cock instantly standing at attention. There’s no way she doesn’t notice. Damn. I whirl her around to solid ground and then we’re just there, in the middle of the damn rain, pressed against each other. Droplets of water cling to her face and lips, transfixing me for what might be only seconds, but every one of them feels like a year as I will myself not to kiss her.

Don’t do it.

“Jason,” she whispers, the way she had in the truck, and in a word, she has my zipper all but breaking and my mind exploding with about ten ways I could make that smart mouth of hers moan my name. And about five ways I want the mouth doing the moaning on my body.

The sky seems to moan with those thoughts, thunder erupting, lightning shooting through the darkness, while Jessica twists her fingers in my shirt and looks around in urgent inspection. “What about a tornado? Is there going to be a tornado?”

“It’s calm before they hit,” I assure her, while me with her is another story. There is nothing calm about what she makes me feel.

Another crash overhead is followed by wicked lightning that has her jumping and me scooping her up and carrying her toward the house before we both end up a target. She curls into me, holding on tight, covering her face against the rain with my chest. It’s like something out of a damn romance novel, but the only hero I plan to be for any woman is naked and then gone the next day. I can’t be what she deserves.

I manage to arrive at the porch without trouble and stomp my way up the stairs, resisting that moment when I set her down, but I do it. I set her the hell down and tell myself to step away, walk away. Go home and take a cold damn shower. Instead, she settles on her feet and lightning blasts a blazing line across the sky again. “You need to get inside,” I say, opening her door and reaching to flip on a light, one that doesn’t come on.

“It’s burned out,” she offers. “I just need to go to the living room and turn on a lamp.”

Go to the living room of the dark cottage alone. We might be in Sweetwater, where it’s generally safe, but she’s the new fresh meat in a town filled with ranchers. I’m not letting that happen. “I’ll get the light, but I want you inside away from the lightning.” I enter and take her with me, and that is where the trouble becomes real trouble. I pause and mess with the light switch several times and the burnt out light isn’t burned out. Obviously, there’s a short because now it comes on and we’re inside the cottage, standing at the door, facing each other.

She pulls down her hood. I pull down my hood. I have a flash of her holding onto that towel when it fell, her creamy white skin and puckered nipples displayed for my view.

“What are you thinking?” she asks softly. Her teeth scrape her bottom lip and I’m done.

“Oh hell,” I murmur, and just that easily, my fingers are tangled in her hair as I say, “About kissing you. That’s what I’m thinking.” My mouth crashes down on hers, tongue licking into her mouth, and sweet baby Jesus, she is sweet on the tongue, honey on a bitter man’s lips. She moans softly, her fingers grappling at my T-shirt, hanging there, twisting there.

I back her up, press her against the door, tearing my mouth from hers. “I’m not the guy you date. I’m the guy you fuck. This is a mistake. I can’t kiss you again.”

“I don’t want a date. It’s been too long since I’ve been properly fucked. So if you can’t do that, then you’re right. This is a mistake and you should most definitely not kiss me again.”

I curse and kiss her again.

The Truth about about Cowboys by Lisa Renee Jones, out now!

I had my life figured out. Engaged to a successful man. About to make partner at my firm. Bought a high-rise apartment in downtown Dallas.

And then, poof, it’s all gone. Now, like in some cheesy romantic comedy, my car has broken down in the pouring rain on my way to “find myself” in The Middle of Nowhere, Texas. Cue hot guy coming to my rescue and changing my tire. This is the part where we flirt and have a meet-cute, right? That’s how it works in romance novels, and I should know―after all, I’m coming to Texas to write my own cowboy romance. But nope. This sexy cowboy lights into me about not being prepared for the country roads and how inappropriate my high-heeled boots are.

Little did I know, Jason Jenks would tilt my world into a new dimension with his sinful smirk and his bad attitude. Every time I turn around, he’s there to reluctantly save the day. And every time, I think there may be something to that spark we ignite. But there’s a reason the majority of country songs are about broken hearts. The closer I get to this man, the closer I get to learning the truth about cowboys
