[Note from Frolic: We’re so excited to have author Hailey Turner guest post on the site today. Take it away, Hailey!]
Picking my favorite queer paranormal romances is like asking me to pick which cookie I want from a box containing all the yummy flavors. I don’t want to choose just one!
I love paranormal romance and urban fantasy books in all their many and varied forms. It doesn’t matter if they’re released by traditional publishers or indie authors – if it’s queer and full of supernatural goodness, I want to read it and I’m hoarding the book like a dragon. My only problem is time, and the lack of not owning a TARDIS. Anyone have a Doctor who can help?
What’s great about paranormal romance and urban fantasy is there are so many different ways to tell a story within the genre. You can have an open world where the supernatural is known to the public, or a closed world where humanity is in the dark about what goes bump in the night. You can pick one kind of creature to be your main focus or throw in every myth under the sun for a smorgasbord of plot.
I love all the many roadmaps that authors build to tell their very different stories. There are so many options to choose from, and so many books that keep getting added to my kindle.
I tend not to read paranormal romance and urban fantasy when I’m actually in the midst of writing it myself. It’s a personal preference for me, and it leaves me with very limited moments throughout the year in between writing books where I can read my favorite genre. That’s when I go into hermit mode and no one sees me for days on end outside my day job. At this point, my To Be Read pile is giving Mount Everest a run for its money in terms of height, but I hope to conquer it soon.
