How to Give Back During the COVID Crisis

It’s easy to feel helpless in the midst of COVID-19. While the stress of the pandemic is certainly bringing out the worst in some people, it also bringing out the best in others. Now, more than ever, it’s crucial we come together in a sense of community and do our part. If you’re looking for a way you can give back while still working to flatten the curve, consider some of these options:

Donate

I know many of us are not only facing health insecurities, but also financial insecurities too, and there’s no shame if you don’t have any money to donate. But, if you do have a few spare dollars, consider donating them to a worthy cause. Charity Navigator has comprehensive list of ethical and financially responsible organizations to donate to to contribute to the fight against COVID-19. I’m personally a big fan of Direct Relief, an organization that has done wonderful work for disaster relief and are actively responding to COVID-19 by providing supplies and PPE to those on the frontline and helping hospitals increase their critical care capacity.

Another great option is donating to organizations like the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). Reports of domestic violence are increasing with shelter in place protocol, and in this highly stressful time, it’s crucial we support DV survivors as much as possible. Side note: if you need help, here is comprehensive list of resources or dial 1-800-799-7233 to get in contact with the National Domestic Violence Hotline 24/7.

Give blood or plasma

Going out to give blood right now can seem scary, and there is no denying the exposure risk with leaving your home, but if you feel well and are able, I recommend finding a local blood drive to participate in. There is a strong need for donations right now, and your contribution could help save a life. You can find donation locations near you here.

Help food pantries

With the huge amounts of people out of work and children unable to get meals at school, many are facing food insecurities at this time. Feeding America is fantastic organization of nationwide food pantries you can donate to. Next time you place your grocery order or make a trip out, consider picking up a few items and donating them.

Adopt a Grandparent!

To combat loneliness, CHD Living has set-up this amazing program to pair you with an individual in a nursing home. You can sign-up on their website and will then be matched with a senior citizen to video chat with to help them through this time!

Send a pizza to healthcare workers

Nothing says thank you like a delicious pizza. Slice Out Hunger has started a campaign that allows you to send pizza to health centers in need! If you don’t have the money to send a pizza, you can also nominate centers that might benefit from this service on their site.

Above all else, take care of yourself and your loved ones as best you can. These are trying times for everyone, and love and compassion can certainly go a long way.
