Living in a hi-tech world that demands instant communication, makes it easy to forget the romance and excitement of a handwritten letter. Especially a love letter. The next time you want to woo the special someone in your life, consider the old-fashioned love letter. Putting your innermost feelings on paper can a certain mystique about it and may make you nervous — we’ve all started a letter, stopped to rethink it, scraped it, and started again. But take heart and use these five tips for writing a love letter that’s sure to score you the sweetest kiss.

“You had me at ‘Hello’” – You don’t need to quote Shakespeare or steal lines from your favorite rom-com. Simply be yourself. All you need is one genuine sentiment to create your love letter. Winston Churchill started letters to his wife with, “My darling Clemmie.” I bet he had her at “My darling.” Begin your love letter with a sweet, simple greeting.

“Tell Me Why” – Be clear on your intent. Why a love letter? Write what’s on your heart and mind. Say it in your voice, the way you express yourself. When my husband writes me a romantic card, he’ll say something like, “You’re a babe. My babe.” When I write a card to him, I say things like, “I can’t imagine life without you.” Or, “I wonder if I’d go on breathing if you were gone.” Speak straight. Speak true.

“Total Recall” – Maybe you want to mention a special moment or meaningful event. “Remember the time we walked along the river . . .” If a specific memory doesn’t come to mind, comment on a character or personality trait you admire each time it surfaces. Does she go out of her way to care for others? Does the sound of his laughter make you laugh? The more details you give, the more memorable the letter is to the reader.

“Handle with Care” – Go for the element of surprise. While a traditional handwritten note is always grand, consider alternative ways to deliver your affections. Use paints to write on a piece of reclaimed wood. How about a message in the driveway using sidewalk chalk? Or a note slipped into their glove box? Consider what your special someone likes and use a delivery system to match.

“Sealed with A Kiss” – Sign your letter with true affection. A simple “I love you” or “Affectionately Yours,” or even better, words that are significant between the two of you. Avoid requiring a response or action from them, making it another item on their to-do list. This letter is from you to bless the one you love. Of course, you can hand deliver your love letter, but imagine their delight and surprise when they receive a love letter in the mail. Add a little something extra with a special stamp or seal for an extra touch of romance.
