What to Read

It’s National Librarian Day! Here’s What You Should Read.

Today is National Librarian Day. A day to say thank you to all of the librarians that helped guide us through the Dewy Decimal system in our youth. Am I dating myself when I use the phrases card catalog and microfiche? These are the folks that give great recommendations when you need a good shifter book, the people that help you research that odd paper idea in high school, college, or for work. Where on earth would we be without our great librarians? I’m not sure the answer to that, but I do know it would be a sad, lonely place that lacks creativity, love, and support. Librarians cultivate and organize all of the glorious knowledge just waiting for us out in the big, wild world. Librarians are the gatekeepers of awesome – superheroes in their own right.

It’s pretty easy to imagine librarians as heroes and heroines in the romance books we love. In fact, when I started making a list for this article, it grew so long, so fast, culling it down to size, felt almost wrong! Librarians deserve all of the love, so here are a few suggestions to fill your romantic librarian fantasies!

Breathe (Colorado Mountain #4) by Kristen Ashley

Faye Goodknight is Carnal, Colorado’s shy, quiet, bookish librarian. She is probably Carnal’s last living virgin, but chance meeting in the woods with her longtime crush, cop Chace Keaton starts her down a path to finally put an end to her unrequited love problem. Chace, like many Kristen Ashley heroes, is a complicated man. He’s a good guy that has made a fair amount of questionable choices. He feels deep in his bones that a good woman, no a remarkable woman like Faye is way too good for him, he doesn’t deserve the light she will bring into his life. Alas, Faye might just be his last shot at redemption, and she’s going to make sure it’s on her terms. When I read this book back in 2012, I wrote in my notes: “I’m exhausted, this book took every single emotion I’ve ever dreamed of having and pushed it past its limit. I’m exhausted, and I loved every fraking minute of it!” Breathe is a romantic suspense with emphasis on the romance (fabulous first sexual experience scene) AND emphasis on the suspense (hello, the big bad scene, and the resulting conclusion is the epitome of edge of your seat scenarios). I think it might be illegal to write an article about librarian romance heroines and not include Faye Goodknight, she is hands down, the star of this book. A complex character filled with warmth, vulnerability, and strength that will leave you breathless.

American Dreamer (Dreamers #1) Adriana Herrera

There is so much to love about this book, so very much! Nesto is our food truck owner that takes the risk of a lifetime to move his business from busy NYC to the college town of Ithaca, NY. He’s putting all of his hopes and dreams on the line, and he’s given himself a six-month deadline to make his dreams come true. Jude Fuller is our librarian in this story. He’s from a very devout family who disowned him. He’s fine living his life with the job he loves and his great set of friends. All of that is dandy, but Jude is lonely. It takes a lot for him to work up the courage to flirt with the new food truck guy. But when he finally does, well, what we get is a delicious treat for your senses. Both of these men come with their own set of trust issues baggage, finding their way through it, and to ultimate happiness is a ride that will leave you satisfied in all the right ways.

Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs (Jane Jameson #1) by Molly Harper

Our series lead, Jane, is a children’s librarian who ends up fired by her not so lovely boss and given a gift card for potato skins instead of a severance package. Jane is a good girl, in a small town with a great, albeit sometimes quirky family that loves her so you can imagine the range of emotions she experiences when she wakes from a drunken rage bender to discover she has a craving for O Negative. Hilarity and insanity ensue as Jane figures out her new undead life while trying to sort her feelings for her mercurial vampire sire. This is a fabulous kick-off to a rollicking good time of a series!
