“Hey girl” is a thing of the past…
“Hey lass” … now that’s what’s revving the lady’s engines these days!
Ever since the boom of Outlander, I think the world of romance has been hungry for more Scottish heroes. Both in historical and contemporary contexts. It’s certainly why I decided to write a Scottish hero for my latest sports romance release, Blindsided.
So that begs the question…why are Scottish heroes so hot?
Number One: That accent. The Scottish brogue is a tone that can’t be faked and the way they roll their r’s and give that liquid u sound when they speak just draws you right in and makes you want to get lost in their expressive lips as they murmur sweet nothings into your ear….woah! My thoughts ran away with me there. Let’s get back on track!
Number Two: That sexy gruff tone in their voice is To. Die. For. Seriously, it’s like Scottish men are all born with a permanently sore throat and I don’t know why, but it is HOT!
Number Three: Scottish men are unapologetic about their feelings. They feel things grandly, whether it’s happy or sad. It’s not uncommon to find a grown Scotsman weeping over the loss of his beloved football team. Then a moment later he’s willing to throw down if you dare look at his lass the wrong way. That’s the makings for some passionate lovers. Raar!
Number Four: Scottish men are manly and protective. We think of a Scotsman and we picture highlanders in kilts screaming out a battle cry as they fight for king and country. They’re warriors that make you want to fall to the ground just so they can scoop you up and tend to your wounds with their big, meaty paws. Whew…again, my thoughts ran away there!
Okay, okay…I don’t want to set women-kind back a century with this list. We don’t need to be damsels in distress to appreciate a Scottish hero. We just need to know what we like and own that we like it! And a manly, brawny, Scottish hero who calls you lass and weeps when he asks you marry him is a book hero I could read…all…day…long.
But don’t take my word for it…read a Scottish hero for yourself!
Here’s a list of some of my all-time favorite Scottish book heroes:
