Modern Love Poems: I was an abandoned town by Shrutee Choudhary

[Note from Frolic: We’re so excited to have poet Shrutee Choudhary sharing three more original love poems with us today. Take it away, Shrutee!]

4.

I was an abandoned town

with no street lights to guide you home

and yet when you walked in with a candle jar

I could see you needing me

I could see new hopes seeding

inside of me

my hushed dreams from the basement were suddenly back at the storefronts

and the trees alongside my pathways

began to bloom

was it too presumptuous of me

I do not know

although it did happen

too soon

now I look forward to your visits

my inhabitable threshold

sprouts flowers every time

that you come by

maybe someday

I won’t be a distraction

but your home

for now, all I am is alone.

5.

I should’ve known

that I would find my way to you

with eyes closed

after all, you have always been

my north

the needle on my compass

has only ever pointed to you

no matter how far east

I may have wandered

this unrelenting magnetic pull

is a binding force

etched in nature

I couldn’t fight it

if I wanted to.

6.

coffee cups and hiccups

longingly gazing out the window

into a blue abyss

which is a projector screen

for your memories to play on

humming along the tunes of our song

eating at my lips

to resist the urge to smile

like a fool, seated all alone

with no one familiar for miles

where silence sounds like

a cascade of conversations

eyes fall upon me

like blinking salutations

as if to say, they know

they know what it feels like

to be in love

despite my vain attempts

of hiding my firefly face

and the dreamy haze

they’ve caught me

and how could they not

for people who visit

coffee shops all alone

never really are

on their own.

About the Author:

When I’m not busy being a goofball, I like to complicate my life for a living, so I can try and uncomplicate it with words.

I like to travel and make pictures. I’m also an actor, so I’m really all about the stories.

In poetic terms,

I’m the wormhole between reality and fiction

I’m the rhyme and the contradiction.
