I read a bunch of self-published books—wait, I devoured a bunch of self-published books that were amazing, and every single one of them was new adult. They were fast paced, full of angst, and the cliffhangers, OMG! (Abbi Glines and Jessica Sorensen, I’m looking at you). Colleen Hoover’s Hopeless left me crying. Jenn Sterling’s The Perfect Game had me enraged (he cheated on her!), yet I rooted for them to end up together.
They were romances, but they felt like so much more. At that particular time, they definitely weren’t the standard fare you picked up at the bookstore or bought from publishers. They were different. Exciting. Not only did I love reading them, I really wanted to write one, and the idea came to me so quickly. I furiously wrote One Week Girlfriend in little over week and self-published it everywhere I could.
And now here I am, still writing new adult all these years later, but it’s a little different now. I’ve noticed that a lot of NA that’s popular is set in high school (like my upcoming release, Close to Me. ~* Shameless plug alert over *~). So similar ages/timeline, just different settings, different issues (somewhat). Still a lot of fun to write and to read. I have a few favorites I’ve read recently I’d like to mention, so let’s do this!
