Sister, Sister: The Arya & Sansa of Romance Novels

Watching Game of Thrones this weekend, I was reminded how much I love Sansa and Arya together. Whether in real life, as best friends or on the show as the best (sometimes worst) of sisters. In previous seasons, Sansa said Arya was the strongest person she knew and *spoiler* this week Arya says Sansa is the smartest person she’s met. We’ve come a long way in the Game of Thrones world and I love these moments where the girls compliment and lift the other up. In that spirit, I wanted to explore key elements in sister relationships in romance.

Competitiveness

Having a sister of my own, there’s a certain competitive edge that can come up between sisters. Whether it’s who has the better grades, who has the better clothes, or maybe who gets the crown? In Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake sister relationships are built on competition. This is for those that are looking for a book with a Game of Thrones vibe. There’s plenty of drama, high stakes and political intrigue. It’s not quite as dark as GoT, this is like YA’s answer to that. It’s a series and the premise is three sisters that have to fight to the death until one reigns supreme. She who wins is the next queen. But as the story rolls on, plot twists and secrets make the sister’s question everything they knew. The series isn’t complete and I, for one, am rooting for these sisters to stick together.

Encouragement

My Life in Shambles by Karina Halle is about a group of three sisters who take a trip to Ireland. They push their sister to explore new adventures, have a YES to anything kind of trip and explore new possibilities. Valerie was reeling after losing her job, her fiancé and she needed that extra push. Having her sisters there to push her, ended up being her best adventure. Sisters should always embrace you and encourage you to live life to the fullest. Sisters are there to lift you up and be your biggest support system and to also remind you to have fun.

Protection/Love

To end my list, let’s talk about a classic! What better book to celebrate sister relationships than the Bennet sisters? Elizabeth Bennet loved her sisters and did the best she could to protect them. She did it against any enemy, whether it be to a future husband prospect or their parents, they rally together for each other.
