To explain a little about what this post will be about, I’m taking the intro I did for the last one: In every romance book you read there are tropes or archetypes. You can also see them in shows, movies, plays, etc. Romantic tropes are everywhere, and they are fabulous. I adore them and I always tend to find my favorite ones in romance books so I can enjoy them more. I decided to do a sort of Trope Tuesday piece where I will be talking about many tropes and recommend you all some of my favorites that fit.
What is a trope? Urban Dictionary explains it best I think: “Despite the erroneous definitions already published here, trope on the interwebs really refers to an often overused plot device. It can also be described as another variation on the same theme. TV shows, movies, comics, games, anime’, & books are full of tropes & many rabid fan-sites now name & track said tropes with a self-explanatory title for each one.” We can name a few: accidental pregnancy, best friends to lovers, sibling’s best friend, marriage of convenience, and so many more for sure. Your favorite couples? They probably got a trope too! It’s always so nice to realize or find out your favorite romance trope and keep searching for books with the same theme.
I’m ready for anything that is connected to the Underworld. But this time we aren’t talking about gods and goddesses! I’ll be recommending historical romances that feature ladies of the Underworld, meaning ladies who do business on the other side of the law. Sort of like anti heroines, morally grey characters that are part of the Underworld or were raised in it. I think I’ve read quite a few historical romances that feature heroes who are part of that world, but not many heroines. So this will be a chance to know more books with heroines of the Underworld and also to recommend quite a few ones I’ve known and loved.
I have been huuuuge fan of Rose’s books. You aren’t ready for A Lily Among Thorns but you totally have to pick it up right this second.
If you’re looking for a historical romance where the heroine knows all the names of London’s criminals and has connections all over the Underworld. This is why the hero goes to look for her, because he is in need of some earrings for his sister to get married.
Olivia Waite just published The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics recently (and you also need to pick that up!) but let’s talk about A Thief in the Nude.
This time around our heroine is a thief, ready to steal four paintings she’s searching for. Though her plan goes sideways when the earl’s younger brother discovers her stealing them. He’s a painter and he’s also pretty bored so when she finds Hecuba stealing these paintings, it seems like life is looking up for him now. There’s a trade: she can take the paintings if she agrees to give her four portraits of herself.
An upcoming romance you cannot miss is Cat Sebastian’s A Little Light Mischief. It’s about a thief and how her heart is stolen by her employer’s companion, Alice!
This here is from the synopsis: “Lady’s maid Molly Wilkins is done with thieving—and cheating and stabbing and all the rest of it. She’s determined to keep her hands to herself, so she really shouldn’t be tempted to seduce her employer’s prim and proper companion, Alice. But how can she resist when Alice can’t seem to keep her eyes off Molly?”
A smuggler!!! Yes, yes, Counting on Countess has a heroine who is a smuggler and actually arrives to London to sell her illicit goods. The hero is in need of a wife and the heroine is in search of funding so she can keep her operation afloat. What can they do… They agree to marry and he agrees to give her a very good allowance. But problems starts to arise and feelings start to happen.
