To explain a little about what this post will be about, every Trope Tuesday post starts with the same introduction. In every romance book you read there are tropes or archetypes you find inside its pages. You can also see them in shows, movies, plays, etc. Every type of entertainment and media. Romantic tropes are everywhere, and they are fabulous. I adore them and I always tend to find my favorite ones in romance books so I can enjoy them even more. Trope Tuesday is a weekly column where I share books that I know people will enjoy with a specific central trope.
What is a trope? Urban Dictionary explains it best: “Despite the erroneous definitions already published here, trope on the interwebs really refers to an often overused plot device. It can also be described as another variation on the same theme. TV shows, movies, comics, games, anime’, & books are full of tropes & many rabid fan-sites now name & track said tropes with self-explanatory title for each one.” We can name a few: accidental pregnancy, best friends to lovers, sibling’s best friend, marriage of convenience, and so many more. Your favorite couples? They probably got a trope too! It’s always so nice to realize or find out your favorite romance trope and keep searching for books with the same theme. So really? If you had powers, what would you do? Go after your celebrity crush? Or maybe hide it because evil people are searching for magical beings? Powers have their good and bad qualities and they most definitely have very different results however you use them, for good or evil reasons. One thing you have to be is careful and get to know the power inside you so you can have a better grasp of it. The characters in these next books range from novice magical people to very expert beings. Because we are still in the Halloween-y time of the year, I thought this would be a fun way to recommend these books!
Having magical powers or being a magical creature in this world is… not a good thing. Necromancers are on the hunt for them so you better hide before they find you. Our two protagonists, Tobias and Barbara, end up finding each other in Prague in the 90s. Magical librarian and grumpy, cinnamon roll wolf shifter hero. What’s not to love, right?
For obvious reasons, they are both hiding their true selves from the mundane world. If people find out about them, it can become catastrophic. But when Barbara ends up as his research assistant for this collection of rare book editions, they can’t help but be attracted to each other. Tobias is also a pretty reluctant were-shifter because he doesn’t want to be one! You’ll definitely enjoy this novel for this time of the year, and to be honest, for all year round.
A fun, magical romance where an inexperienced witch hexes her celebrity crush instead of giving him good fortune. This hex will create a lot of problems for them (a dark magic cult is going after them!), so they obviously have to reverse the whole spell in order for their lives to get back to their natural state! Let’s not forget that they are developing feelings towards each other which might complicate things.
Sarah Kuhn is one of my favorite writers. I especially love her Heroine Complex series and you might have seen a lot of other Trope Tuesday posts where I recommend them. This time I’m choosing the fourth book in the series, which actually came out pretty recently (in July). And it’s all about Halloween! Perfect, right?
Note: I do recommend reading the previous three books if you want to pick up this one. I mean you can do whatever you want and read this one, but for a better understanding of the couples and characters, I do hope you pick it up from the start!
Haunted Heroine takes us back to Evie’s life. After being a grad school dropout turned personal assistant to a superhero turned a superhero herself, what more is going to happen in her life? A women’s college reports a string of mysterious “hauntings”, and so Evie and Aveda are going to investigate what the heck is going on. Though they’re going as undercover grad students!
I couldn’t not put this book here. If you haven’t read the Hidden Legacy series, I recommend you to fix that. I hadn’t read them a year ago and I thought I should maybe try them because, you see, they’re very popular in Romancelandia. So I did and I do not regret anything. Sapphire Flames is the fourth book in the series, but the first book in the new “trilogy.” Catalina Baylor is the new protagonist in this book, leaving behind Nevada and Rogan, our precious lovelies having their happily ever after somewhere else.
Catalina has one of the greatest developments. She was a shy, quiet girl in her House. But when we meet her again in Sapphire Flames, she’s a powerful Prime and the Head of her House. She has a very, very cool power where she can make anyone fall for her. But it always leads to very terrifying outcomes. She has always been afraid of her own power, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, she has to help them figure out this mystery.
