Smart Podcast, Trashy Books: 427. Mailboxes to Bonetown: Amanda and Sarah Talk Sex Ratings

We received an email from Megan, who wanted to know about the possibility of building rating system for sex in books. TL;DR, we don’t think it’s entirely feasible given how subjective heat levels can be for different readers, but the idea gives us a lot to talk about.

We also talk about Prime Day this week, my younger child’s bar mitzvah, which was last weekend, virtually, from our backyard, and different levels of friendship.

This was a really special night, hosted by our wonderful friend, Rachel Becker, and we are excited to share it with you in an audio format!

First Cup of Coffee with Jeffe Kennedy: October 9, 2020

I’m discussing why authors should never be afraid of their agents and some tips on navigating business relationships in general. Also how I’m little bit at loose ends today and not sure what to do!

First Cup of Coffee – October 12, 2020: We’re doing some exciting (for us) landscaping work. I’m also chatting about more egregious editing fouls and how self-publishing authors should be careful of predatory practices.

First Cup of Coffee – October 13, 2020:Why being sensitive person is a good thing – something I’ve only recently begun to appreciate – and how empathy and compassion makes us better writers, besides being something the world needs.

First Cup of Coffee – October 15, 2020:Why I don’t believe that FOMO is real – or that the feeling might be, but the actuality of missing out isn’t – and other thoughts on Taoism, the flow of the universe and the nature of opportunity.

Big Gay Fiction Podcast: Episode 262 – Listener Favorite: TJ Klune & The Finale of “Green Creek”
To celebrate the upcoming fifth anniversary of the podcast, we have the third Listener Favorite episode. This time the spotlight is on the guest who has appeared on the show more than anyone else, TJ Klune. With the release of “Brothersong,” the “Green Creek” series concludes and we look back at our previous discussions about that series. You’ll also hear from Kirt Graves, the narrator of the “Green Creek” audiobooks. Plus, TJ offers sneak peek into 2021 and beyond in a newly recorded interview.

Boobies & Noobies: Caroline’s Heart

Witches and costumes and problematic tropes, oh my! In the first of this year’s #Cocktober series, Andrea from Shelf Love Podcast joins Kelly to discuss CAROLINE’s HEART by Austin Chant.

The SSR Podcast: Episode 116: The View from Saturday (with Kate Stayman-London)

Every once in while, Alli stumbles her way back to a book that tells her more than she ever could have expected about the kind of reader and writer she’s grown up to be… and The View from Saturday is one of them! On Episode 116, she and her guest take a close look at this 1996 middle grade novel by E.L. Konigsburg, which won the Newbery Medal in 1997.

Alli and Kate discuss the book’s multiple perspectives and framing device, share which of the four core characters they most relate to, talk about the magic of a story that’s about kindness and being seen, and chat about whether or not The View from Saturday should be adapted for the screen. They also talk about elements of the book that most certainly did not hold up very well — most glaringly, its tendency to other characters of color and the use of a noose as a recurring image in the story.

Kate Stayman-London is a novelist, screenwriter, and political strategist. One to Watch is her first book. Follow her on Instagram (@_ksl) and Twitter (@_ksl).
