5 Reasons Vampires are Back and Better than Ever by Zoraida Córdova and Natalie C. Parker

Vampires are back. But for us, vampires never left. These creatures of the night have been enticing audiences and believers for centuries. In the last couple of years, we’ve seen a resurgence in books and TV. Vampires Never Get Old is proud to be part of that. Here are five reasons why vampires are back and better than ever.

1. They’re undead.

And like the end of a 90’s horror movie, they never call it quits. But seriously, vampires are destined to be our faithful, undead companions for eternity and right now, they’re back to tell newer, fresher stories as in the anthology Vampires Never Get Old featuring 11 stores from 12 YA authors.

2. Edward. Cullen.

This one’s gimme, but also undeniable. Without Edward’s mysterious and moody demeanor, his deep brooding brows, his glittery abs, who would we even be? Was there even a world BEC? Probably. But we live in the AEC era and vampires are forever changed because of it. And sweeping into the wake of that oh-so-familiar love triangle and romantic tales like Renée Ahdieh’s The Beautiful and The Damned.

3. Let’s be honest, vampires were born to be queer.

They live forever, are gloriously gorgeous, and they are strong af. And while queerness was (almost) always there in vampiric subtext, it has struggled to find the light (so to speak). But it’s 2020 and in books like Caleb Roehrig’s The Fell of Dark we’ve finally got queer vamps on the page. 

4. The vampires we’re most familiar with might have originated in Eastern Europe, but vampiric mythology has so much more to offer.

There are myths about blood sucking creatures all over the world, i.e. the Mandurugo “blood sucker” from the Philippines and the Peuchen (blood sucking snake) of Mapuche legend. And Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Certain Dark Things, about Aztec vamps in Mexico City, is even getting new life in 2021 from Nightfire. Add it to your TBR! 

5. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

New Orleans is arguably the epicenter of the American vampire. From Interview with the Vampire to The Originals, stories about this city are teeming with vampires. In fact, the city has its own blood-sucking legend and you can find it in local NOLA author, Alys Arden’s paranormal romance series —The Casquette Girls. Like most of us, Arden has always known that the myth of the vampire can never die. It’s the perfect time to catch up because the final book in the quartet launches January 2021.
