Diverse Book Corner: Year of the Latinx

The New Year of 2020 looks like it’s going to be the year of the most exciting and original Latinx reads yet! This past year of 2019 is the first year that has had one of the best Latinx books I have ever read where I have finally felt seen and understood as a Latina. Now I am looking forward to delving into some unique and inspiring Latinx 2020 reads and falling in love with new characters and stories. Here are the top six Latinx reads mixed with friendship, New Year’s resolutions, wedding disasters, food and family, fantasy, and spooky fun adventures!

The Resolutions by Mia Garcia

Jess and her friends have tradition of making resolutions together, but senior year is coming, and Jess is feeling like everything around her is changing. Her friends are starting to grow apart and in effort to keep everyone together she adds a new twist to their New Year’s Resolutions traditions. She decides to have everyone make resolutions for one another. The New Year’s resolutions they make for one another involves daring to kiss someone, learning Spanish, and saying yes to everything. Jess is hopeful this plan will bring her friends together in having the best senior year ever but as the year progresses the best laid plans often go awry, and their friendships are put to the test.

Even though, this book was released in November 2018 there has been a lot of hype recently in the book world as a perfect Latinx book to read for the New Year. The Resolutions seems like a light fluffy read to inspire those New Year’s resolutions!

Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibanez

Ximena’s people have lost everything when a usurper named Atoc attained a timeworn relic and drove out the Illustrian royalty from La Ciudad which is inspired by the country of Bolivia. After Atoc demands Xiomara to marry him she accepts but her motivation is to find the ancient relic and bring the Illustraian royalty back to where it started. In her journey, Ximena looks for the relic by using her magical ability of spinning and weaving thread from moonlight. Her mission to attain the ancient relic takes a turn when she meets a masked vigilante and an impassioned princess. Together they try to overthrow the usurper and fight for the world they deserve to live in.

From the moment I laid eyes on this gorgeous cover I knew this is one of the books I would gobble up for the New Year. This book looks like an exhilarating fantasy filled with lush descriptions and a magically complicated world that will transform you from the first page.

The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa

Once upon a time Caroline Santos was a bride left at the altar. When Caroline became a wedding planner, she left her bride woes behind and is now the top wedding coordinator in DC. When she impresses an important guest, she is presented the opportunity of a lifetime. The only catch is that she has to work with the man that is the culprit from her own failed nuptials. Max Hartley is her ultimate nemesis and she wants nothing to do with him. Lina needs to try her best to work with public enemy number one and curate a successful presentation, but their best laid plans take an unexpected turn. Lina and Max quickly realize that their hate for each other might be creating some sparks.

This hate to love romance is giving me The Wedding Planner feels and I am so here for it! If you’re planning a wedding or being invited to countless weddings next year like I am this is the perfect romcom escape to read during the stressful wedding season.

Salty, Bitter, Sweet by Mayra Cuevas

After the death of her Cuban Abuela and the divorce of her parents, Isabella Fields is feeling like her whole family is falling apart. The inspiring chef moves in with her dad and his newly pregnant wife in France. Immediately she feels like stranger in her father’s new family until she realizes she is only 30 minutes away from the famous restaurant owned by Chef Pascal Grattard. Isabella is presented a once in a lifetime opportunity when she gets the chance to enter an international kitchen apprenticeship. The prize will transform Isabella’s world and put her life back together. Isabella tries to put her life back in order while struggling with living in France, missing her Abuela, and meeting a new guy and his albino dog.

Salty, Bitter, Sweet seems like a deliciously sweet coming of age contemporary about a girl finding her own way in life and realizing that the best things in life are usually unexpected. There are only two requirements while reading Salty, Bitter, Sweet and that is a large glass of Bordeaux wine and a French tart in hand.

Ghost Squad by Claribel Ortega

In this Halloweenie middle-grade read, Lucely and her bff Syd accidentally cast spell that awakens some evil spirits. These evil spirits roam the charming little streets of St. Augustine causing absolute destruction and the need to hatch up a plan to stop the madness! Syd brings her witchy abuela Babette for the ride and her fluffy tabby cat Chunk to fight the spirits. They need to work together to stop these spirits and save their beloved town.

When I heard that Ghost Squad is introduced as a Latinx cast with a Stranger Things Meets Coco vibe, I immediately put it to the top of my Halloween TBR for 2020. Ortega is probably going to achieve one of my ultimate childhood fantasies of running around a quaint little town and fighting spooky spirits with my best friend!

Lobizona by Romina Garber

Manuela Azul escaped Argentina as an undocumented immigrant to get away from her father’s Argentine crime-family and is living cramped existence in a tiny apartment in Miami, FL. Then her whole life falls apart when she finds out that her grandmother has been assaulted and her mother has been arrested by ICE. Now Manuela is left with nothing but a clue to her tumultuous past. She discovers a “Z” emblem linked to her dead father and his criminal history. This world that she has uncovered comes from Argentine folklore where she has learned that the seventh consecutive daughter is born a witch and the seventh consecutive son is a werewolf. As Manu researches further into her own family history, she is shocked to find that their entire existence is illegal.

Lobizona is the kind of book that we all need in this divisive political climate we live in. I have a feeling that Garber’s book is going to be one of the most immersive and original fantasy reads of 2020.
