First Cup of Coffee with Jeffe Kennedy:  July 24, 2020

First Cup of Coffee – July 27, 2020: On conversations and brainstorming with bestie Grace Draven, and reports on what I’ve been reading lately – including mild complaints on female characters not having enough to do.

First Cup of Coffee – July 28, 2020: A bit on how the universe works in strange ways, the importance of author voice – and how to refine it – and whether querying with pristine mss is *that* important. Also, an amazing movie for studying suspense!

Big Gay Fiction Podcast: Episode 251 – A Trip to Summer Camp with L.C. Rosen
Jeff reviews “Camp” by L.C. Rosen and then discusses the book with the author. Lev talks about why he wrote the rom-com style story of Randy and Hudson and what he hopes readers take away from the story. Lev also shares little bit of info on the forthcoming movie adaptation, what got him into writing and why queer YA stories are so important. Will’s “Christmas in July” reading concludes with “Three Dates of Christmas” by KC Burn, “Temporary Santa” by Dev Bentham and “An Everyday Hero” by E.J. Russell.

Learning the Tropes: I Give You My Body by Diana Gabaldon
This week Erin and Clayton read I Give You My Body…How I Write Sex Scenes by Diana Gabaldon and talked about the author’s distaste for the Romance label, the one great nugget of advice in this book and euphemisms… so many euphemisms.

The SSR Podcast: Episode 105: Mr. Popper’s Penguins (with Swati Teerdhala)
On Episode 105, Alli sets aside her very real, very intense fear of birds for conversation about Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Written in 1938 by Richard and Florence Atwater, this Newbery Honor winner is the story of a house painter named Mr. Popper who dreams of traveling to the Arctic and the penguins who come into his life thanks to one of his heroes, explorer Admiral Drake. Alli and her guest Swati chat about the many antics of Popper’s penguins, as well as the extent to which Mr. Popper represents a little bit of all of us! They also talk about how the book would be received by animal rights groups if it were published in 2020, the lack of nuance in Mrs. Popper’s portrayal, and cancel culture, more broadly.

Comedian Neel Ghosh joins Becky as they walk the plank into the steamy waters of “What the Parrot Saw” ($3.99). And boy… that parrot saw LOT.
