Megan McCafferty: “My books have always been more about character than plot.”

Aurora: What was your inspiration behind your most recent novel? 

Megan: I was getting really depressed by the seemingly endless cycle of bad news. Writing The Mall was an escape to simpler time and place. The early 90s were far from perfect, but it was so much fun to tap into the music, tv shows, movies and fashion and of the era. I hope that sense of joy comes through for the readers.

What character in this novel do you most relate to and why? 

I definitely relate to Cassie. It’s intentional that she’s not the most likable person at the start of the novel: she uses her intelligence as a shield and can be quite judgmental. I think back to my high school years and regret all the time I wasted dismissing people and opportunities. Fortunately, like Cassie, I learned from my mistakes and came to realize that wisdom often springs from unexpected sources.

Why do you feel novels with powerful and unique characters are so popular and have such a voice right now? 

I don’t know why it’s trending that way right now but I’m happy about it! My books have always been more about character than plot. I look for the same in my own reading choices. A vibrant voice can go a very long way in captivating and keeping my interest.

What’s next for you in the bookish world? 

I just turned in a sequel to True to Your Selfie, my middle school mean girl novel published earlier this year by Scholastic. And I’m working on my first ever book for and about adults about a friendship between three moms that falls apart because of drama stirred up by their kids’ college applications and acceptances. I’ve got major news I’m not allowed to announce yet, but let’s just say that I’ll have a 5-book series published in 2021!
