Perfect Pairings

Perfect Pairings: Meghan Markle Outfits and Romance Novels by Teri Wilson

[Note from Frolic: We’re so excited to have author Teri Wilson back to the site today! She’s paired some of Megan Markle’s best outfits with some grat romance novels.]

Meghan Markle’s official title may be the Duchess of Sussex, but let’s be real. When it comes to fashion, Meghan is a QUEEN. According to Lyst, she was the number one most influential dresser of 2019. Whenever she wears something, demand for that item immediately skyrockets, whether it’s a chambray shirt from J. Crew or an LBD from Givenchy. Case in point: I’m wearing a pair of Starling slippers from Birdies (a fave of Meghan’s since her Suits days) while I type this.

Recently, all eyes were on Meghan and Harry as they made their last official visit to England as working members of the royal family. And whoa, y’all. Our American duchess was not messing around. Get your tiaras ready and fire up your e-readers, because we’re pairing her most iconic looks of all time with some amazing reads.

Meghan in blue Victoria Beckham & No Judgments by Meg Cabot

This picture! It looks like movie poster for a romcom. For her first appearance with her royal hubby since announcing their move to North America, Meghan wore a super gorgeous turquoise pencil dress by Victoria Beckham. London being London, they got caught in the rain, so I’m pairing this beautiful look with No Judgments by Meg Cabot. We all know Meg Cabot as the author of The Princess Diaries, so she’s perfect match for royal fashion. No Judgments is a romance set during an impending hurricane, when the animal-loving heroine decides to try and save all the dogs and cats in the storm’s path. When the island’s most notorious heartbreaker joins forces with her, the rescue mission turns unexpectedly romantic. Duchess Meghan is a big supporter of pet rescue, so I know she’d be a fan.

Meghan’s “husband shirt” and American Royals  by Katharine McGee

Way back when we all knew that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were secretly dating, the anticipation of their first official appearance together was at fever pitch. When it finally happened, Meghan slayed us all by wearing a crisp white cotton shirt by Misha Nonoo, known as The Husband shirt on the designer’s website. Coincidence? I think not. Meghan also wore a pair of ripped jeans by Mother, giving this entire ensemble a distinctly American vibe. So I’m pairing this look with American Royals by Katharine McGee. This royal read imagines what life would be like today if George Washington had been our country’s first monarch instead of the first president. It’s full of delicious royal drama as American as blue jeans and apple pie.

Meghan in green Emilia Wickstead and Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory

At her final engagement as working royal, Meghan wore a striking green cape dress by Emilia Wickstead to the Commonwealth Day service as Westminster Abbey. Swoon alert: the lining of Prince Harry’s suit was also green, a perfect match. This royally romantic look pairs well with Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory, and not just because the book cover is emerald green with lovely gold sparkles. Guillory’s inspiration for the heroine in this royal-adjacent romance was none other than Doria Ragland, Meghan Markle’s mom. It’s also the perfect read for anyone who wants to see an independent woman in her 40’s find her own royal happy ever after.

Meghan in red Safiyaa at the Mountbatten Festival of Music and Who Rescued Who by Victoria Schade

For another engagement during Harry and Meghan’s recent trip to the UK, the royal duo attended the Mountbatten Festival of Music, and Meghan wore red show-stopper of a gown by London-based fashion label Safiyaa. It was a definite MOMENT. I’m pairing this ultra-glam look with Who Rescued Who by Victoria Schade, a fabulous romcom about an American who visits the UK temporarily and ends up starting an entirely new life. Again, there are rescue dogs too. I can totally see Meghan kicking off her Cinderella shoes and enjoying this book in a claw-foot bubble bath somewhere in the English countryside.

Meghan in Givenchy on her wedding day and The Girl in White Gloves by Kerri Maher

Before Meghan married Harry and became duchess, Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III in a fairy tale ceremony in 1958 and became Princess Grace of Monaco. Like Meghan, Grace was an American. She was also an actress, and when Meghan walked down the aisle at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, the similarities were undeniable. I’m pairing Meghan’s elegant wedding gown with The Girl in White Gloves by Kerri Maher. This fictionalized account of Grace Kelly’s life as an actress and her transition to being royal is riveting and lush. Plus, how gorgeous is that cover?
