[Note from Frolic: We’re so excited to welcome poet Shrutee Choudhary back to the site. She’s sharing more of her breathtaking modern love poems with us!]

1. It is time. my lips are quivering from holding behind a string of words

which keep queuing up

like immigrants at the border

ready, with their entire lives packed

in suitcases, ready

for what comes next.

i hold onto these words like my mother holds onto my grandmother’s worn out saree, refusing to give it away.

she won’t wash it, she won’t wear it. so her traces remain unadulterated, and if she closes her eyes really tight, she can almost conjure up her scent.

i hold onto them like a rope tied

to something precious at the other end, the rope scathing my clutched palms

the rope daring me to let go

and yet

I can’t. by now my entire being trembles, I’m unable to eat. the fork is a drumstick, a decoy music to the already ambient room.

you put your hand on my turbulent knee and give it a balmy, sunset smile

the kind that makes me want to leap through the monuments I’ve created out of my walls —

an entire town between my ready words and the rest of my life.

your eyes kiss my shaken demeanour, a drop of tear escapes mine

and all the queued up words

dissipate into a feeling

rowing a boat, in the silent lake of my emotions

and you smile, that smile,

loaded with meaning and a newfound knowledge

you smile an embrace, we don’t touch but you’re holding my face

and in the quietness of the moment

your earnest voice says

“I love you too”

and there we are

not a thing has changed around us except the rest of our lives.

2. your touch caused

ripples

upon my skin

so one night

I made you touch

the sky

all the darkness

was stirred

and

galaxies were brought

to life.

About the Author:

When I’m not busy being a goofball, I like to complicate my life for a living, so I can try and uncomplicate it with words.

I like to travel and make pictures. I’m also an actor, so I’m really all about the stories.

In poetic terms,

I’m the wormhole between reality and fiction

I’m the rhyme and the contradiction.
